Chapter 10

"Today is going to suck." I sighed as I got dressed in my scrubs.

"One day at work without Jackson is not going to kill you." Izzie laughs. Jackson took the day off because his grandfather was coming into town for a visit. I wasn't looking forward to spending a day at the hospital without him. I'm just so used to having him here.

"It might." I say.

"You are so love sick. It's actually kind of cute. I remember when Alex and I were like that." She sighs.

"Have you and Alex spoken since you've been back?"

"No, I've accepted that we're not getting back together and he's still sleeping with Lexie so he obviously isn't to heartbroken over it." She shrugs.

"Since when are him and Lexie still sleeping together?"

"Oh you didn't hear? Derek walked into Alex's room to see if he needed a ride to work and Lexie was waiting for Alex. Naked in his bed." She chuckled bitterly.

"Really? I've got to start back staying at Meredith's. I'm missing all of the drama." I shake my head.

"Yeah, you are. You and Jackson might as well live together now as much as you stay over there." She says making me laugh before we walk out of the locker room. I left to find Dr. Nelson who sent me to check his patients stats then I went to the front desk to finish charting.

"Liliana." Cristina calls catching my attention.

"Yes?"

"So you weren't going to tell me who Jackson's grandfather is?"

"Why are you asking about Jackson and his grandfather?" I frown since I have no idea what she's talking about or why she would even care.

"Because they're here. You could've told me Jackson is a part of medical royalty. His grandfather is Harper freaking Avery."

"What? He never told me." I frowned.

Harper Avery is a legend in the medical world and I was surprised that Jackson never mentioned such a big thing to me.

"Really?"

"Yes really. I'll be back." I sighed before walking off to an on call room and paging Jackson who walks in a short while later.

"Hey, what's wrong? Why did you page me 911?" He frowns entering the room.

"Why didn't you ever mention that your grandfather is the Harper Avery?"

"That's why you paged me?" He scoffed.

"Yes, that's why I paged you." I sigh

"It's just not something I mention. I don't like for people to know me as Harper Avery's grandson. All they see is my family name after they find out."

"But I am your girlfriend. I am not just people, so I would think that you would at least mention it to me." I say.

"Well I didn't and it's not really any of your business." He says getting defensive.

"Oh really." I say folding my arms.

"Yes, really. The way you're acting right now is exactly the reason that I don't tell people who my family is." He shook his head. "Now I need to go back to check on my grandfather, which is why I'm here since you didn't bother to ask why I would be at the hospital on my off day." He said before walking out of the on call room and slamming the door behind him.

"What an ass." I mumble before walking out of the on call room.

Dr. Nelson paged me shortly after and I joined him in the O.R. to clip an aneurysm. He actually let me do most of the surgery.

Of course I miss working with Derek 24/7, but I actually do like working with Nelson. He really lets me takeover in the OR and show my skills. It took some time to get used to it, but Derek's been Chief for a month now, so I've grown to be okay with it. After leaving the OR I grabbed my lunch then went to Derek's office.

"Your boyfriends grandfather is a piece of work." Derek says as I sit down.

"How is he?" I ask.

"He'll be fine, if he'll just sit back and let us do our jobs. He's so damn stubborn." He shakes his head.

"Probably where his grandson gets it from." I frown as I eat my chips.

"Did you two have a fight?" He asks, hearing the irritation in my voice.

"Yeah." I nodded. "I was mad that he didn't tell me that his grandfather is Harper Avery and then he got mad that I made a big deal out of it."

"I can understand why that would bother him?" Derek nodded.."Derek, you're my bestfriend. You're supposed to be on my side." I remind him.

"I'm always on your side, but I'm just saying people have probably made a big deal over Jackson's grandfather his whole life and now that he's here he probably wants to build his own legacy and be known as himself rather than Harper Avery's grandson plus you're his girlfriend. You're the last person he wants to treat him differently because of his name." Derek points out.

"You're right." I sigh, realizing just how wrong I was.

"I know I am." He smirks taking some of my chips.

"Get your own." I say slapping his hand.

"You know you're very violent, you should work on that." He laughs. I finish eating then I go to check on Nelson's post ops. As soon as I finish I get a page from Izzie.

"Hey Iz, you need me for something?" I ask walking up to her.

"There was a complication with Jackson's grandfathers surgery so they have to take him back to the O.R. They're not letting Jackson go back this time, so I figured he'd appreciate your company." She says pointing over at Jackson who's sitting in the waiting area.

"Thanks for paging me." I tell her.

"Of course, go be there for Jackson." She waves me away.

I walk over to Jackson and sit beside him grabbing his hand.

"I'm sorry for making a big deal about your grandfather earlier. I was a complete ass." I admitted. "I was just surprised, but I want you to know it doesn't make me think of you any differently. When I look at you I don't see your name or your legacy. I just see the man I love." I assure him.

"I know. I'm sorry I overreacted. It's just, I hate when people know I'm related to him. It's not easy being his grandson, you know? I know the name has helped, but he is not easy. Brilliant, but not easy." He sighs.

"I can only imagine."

"He wants to control every decision I make in my life, the only reason he came down to visit is because he has a spot saved for me at Mass Gen and he's trying to convince me to take it."

"He wants you to move to back Massachusetts?" I frown.

"Yeah, but I told him I'm not doing that."

"Jackson, it's a great opportunity. I hope you're not turning it down just for me. I mean of course I want you here, but I would never ask you to pass up on such a great offer." I say honestly.

"Of course you are a reason I'm staying, but it's also for me. If I move back to Massachusetts my life isn't going to be my life. It's going to be my families life, it's going to be about what they want for me instead of what I want for me, so me deciding to stay is for both us."

"Okay." I smile. I sit with Jackson and keep him company until we see Meredith walking our way, meaning that the surgery is finished making us both stand up, anxious to see what she has to say.

"Hey, so he's fine. It was an allergy caused by the suture." Meredith says.

"Great, can we go see him?" Jackson asks.

"Yeah." Meredith smiles. I walk with Jackson as he goes to see his grandfather.

"I can't believe the complication was his own fault. That's awesome. We should publish that story since he thinks he's so perfect." Jackson smirks. His grandfather would only let them use a certain type of suture during the first surgery, which is what caused the complication.

"Jackson, don't be so hard on him. I know you say he's overbearing and controlling which has to suck, but he's alive and he cares about you and he wants the best for you, so instead of pushing him away why don't you try to be there for him and learn from him." I suggest.

"Maybe I am being a little hard on him. It's just that ever since I can remember he's acted like he was perfect and for once he actually made a mistake."

"I know, but don't rub it in his face. Be nice, because if you're nice to him, I'll be very nice to you later." I smirk.

"Best behavior it is then." He smiles giving me a kiss.

"Now go in there and see your grandfather." I say to him as we stop in front of his granfather's room.

"You want to come with me and meet him?"

"Jackson that's fine, you don't have to introduce me to him"

"I know, but I want to. You're an important part of my life and I want him to meet you." He says.

"Are you sure?" I ask.

"Yeah, come on." He smiles taking my hand and leading me into the room.
