Chapter 70

Ben had worked just as hard, and he’d sacrificed everything for his agency. What must it be like to suddenly realize he couldn’t trust the reasons behind some of the orders he’d been given?

“I want to believe we had to do what we did.” The muscles under Lennon’s hands trembled. “What if we didn’t? What if there was someone—what if the decisions behind those choices were corrupt the whole time?”

Lennon took a deep breath. Would he be so willing to absolve Ben if he weren’t Ben? Would he say the same thing to Kaden, for example? He couldn’t worry about that right now. He could only try to keep Ben on an even keel. “You can’t worry about that right now. We can’t change what’s already happened. You made the best choices you could with the information you had. And you’ll keep doing that going forward. If that information happens to be better, then that’s to everyone’s benefit, right?”

Ben’s breath shuddered for a moment, and then he straightened up. “Yes. Exactly. We can do this.”
