Game of Thorns

"Where am I?"

Stella asked as she saw herself waking up on a small, abandoned town. She woke up from nowhere.

It was a starry night with the glaring moonlight as the only source of light for every establishment; midnight. Waking up there became vague for her – no reasons, no conclusions, no previous traces: everything was just a delineation of devoid. She found herself in the middle of that lifeless vicinity, now randomly standing in front of a mailbox with her head aching in distress. She was alone by herself

"Where am I.. why am I here?" She looked around and saw a site full of trees and abandoned houses; a dead town. "Oh my god, this can't be real!"

Everything feels foreign in her sight; mostly dark and creepy. It was her first time to be there in that unknown land, but something inside her makes her feel like she has been there once.. though, she can't remember when and how. It must have been a childhood memory deleted by some sort of infantile amnesia.

Her head was blank until she noticed the suit she's wearing – it was a familiar one. It was white as snow and its thick fabric can be compared to that of an animal skin. She tried to unzip, but she can't. It must be locked unto her body.

She looked around into nonchalance until she saw a bag beside her. It was like a heavy camping bag that might help her survive a night or two.. It felt like a necessity in her senses so she grabbed it up, fixed herself and inspect the dead place for awhile.. it was all new to her.

"What town is this? Oh god, I'm totally lost.." She whispered, then took a short walk.

"I must find someone to ask." The breeze covered her skin as she continued walking into nothingness, regardless of where her feet may take her.

Walking along the dead streets, nothing can be seen except houses and trees. No one was passing by. Everything was void and stagnant with the humming of the wind as the only music playing.

She continued heading to different community houses until a light post turned on all of a sudden, a kilometer away from her. "A light post.." A hope lightens up her face, "There must be someone." She said, then hurriedly rushed to the light she saw.

The post was in the middle of a graveyard. Stella didn't recognize it until she was there in front of the post. "Now I'm on a graveyard? Why didn't I see this coming?" She told herself as she concluded everything.

It all felt a little creep unto her thick skin. She tried calling out of nowhere with her voice aloud, "Hello? Anybody home?" she looked around within the place. She tried to catch attentions of people, if there's any.

She kept on turning her eyes around the place. No one was there. Nothing's with life. The community she's into was totally abandoned. But at the back of her mind, she was asking; "Why did the light post suddenly turned on?" – it became a mystery she wanted to resolve.

Interrupting her in deep thought, A loud and screeching sound was heard from her back. The hairs behind her neck stood up — leaving her shuddered by a sudden shock. "What the fuck was that?" she turned around to check where the sound came from; but she didn't see anything. Her heart beats faster as her instinct sensed a caution. "Oh no, I got to get out of here."

The light started to blink repeatedly as she started taking steps away from the post. She stared at the blinking light while stepping behind her back in dribs and drabs. All of a sudden, a man's silhouette holding a butcher's knife appeared, in a blink of an eye. "Oh shit!"

She involuntarily ran fast, away from that figure of terror and fear. She was breathing heavily as she heard that man laugh like an evil, continuously running towards her.

"HELP! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP! SOMEONE'S GOING TO KILL ME!" She screamed and growled like an animal in distress. Her sweat felt cold as she runs on that empty street.

"HELP MEEEEE!"

She looked again behind her back and saw that the silhouette of that tall man was gone in a sudden. Her feet ran slowly, then stopped. She took a break and dropped a series of heavy sighs.

Stella, all of a sudden, found herself in front of an abandoned hospital. It was a five-storey building with broken windows and shattered glasses. The color of its paint was not clear in plain sight because of the darkness, yet, Its main door was opened and the hallway lights are on: dimmed and flickering.

"I just hope I have something that could help." She opened her bag and looked for something she can use if she would enter the establishment. Her hands dig deeper until she found a stamped letter, "for Stella"—written at the envelope seal. She Opened it with a doubt in her mind, "Why do I have this letter? I can't even remember how I get this.. Am I even existing in the reality?" She murmured in baffled questions.

Her mind focused on the last thing she asked herself—The words echoed again and again as it directs her brain in a flash of an imagery;

In her memory, She vaguely saw herself in a first person point of view, strapped on a chair while she was in a white-colored room. It made a vivid scene where aside from her, there were also three other girls on separate chairs, strapped the way she does. A man in front of her gives instructions to four other men in masks—to put a device in her head as she felt dizzy.

The other girls were crying, continuously begging to stop it. One of the masked man keeps on telling them, "You signed the terms, there can't be holding back now."

They turned a switch on, and that man sitting in front of her said, "Stella, let the games begin."

Then, everything turned black. End of her recall.

The cold breeze got her back to her senses. She hurriedly opened, then read the content of the letter she saw inside her bag:

To Stella,

Good evening, player number 4. This letter serves as your official pass to this ultra-reality game called "The Abandoned". You are an avid fan of this horror game and even got ranked first on the worldwide tournament before. But unfortunately, our system detected that you've cheated playing it. So, we've decided to delete the CODES you've stored in your memory. You've signed the terms. Now, Let the games begin.

—the creator

She shuddered as she concluded everything. She put the letter back into the envelope and crumple it inside her bag.

"W-What? I am player number 4? So, I'm on a game.. like a living hell? Fuck." Stella shook her head in dismay. "I can't even remember what this game was all about! Am I dreaming?" slapped her face side by side to confirm the thought.

She suddenly remembered why she was there. She remembered what really "The Abandoned" is all about: It was a game she used to play before on a console.

She shook her head and think of the rules she has broken—and yes, she CHEATED way back then. She was reigned as the "Master Of Abandoned" before, but then the game team figured out her dirty old tactics. "Oh, fuck what have I done."

Her eyes were redirected on the abandoned hospital's hallway, where she was in front of. The flickering lights intensifies as she expresses grimace. The starry night suddenly became cloudy, which later on, brings heavy rain.

"No, please, not this time!"

She hurriedly ran inside the abandoned hospital to take a shade. She stayed inside for a while, waiting for the rain to stop. She could also hear her stomach growling; she is hungry. "Where could I find food here?"

Suddenly, the flickering lights on the hallway turned on steady. The hairs behind her neck gave her an instinct. "I hope this time it's not a perilous moment." She mumbled.

Stella looked behind her back and saw a beautiful woman wearing a white suit, rubber shoes, and a utility bag like hers. It was another player, she thought. "Hello? Can you please help me? I was totally lost and I can't find the way out." the woman did not talk back. "I'm just wondering maybe we can help each other?" Her talking continues.

Stella took steps closer towards the woman as she continued asking her different things. But in a plain sight, she noticed that the woman's eyes were turning red and her tongue was getting longer and longer. "Oh my god!!" She figured out—it was a trap!

She hurriedly ran towards the exit, but the door vanished like a glitch as she approached. "No! What the—" Her feet take a turn and continued running on the other side of the hospital. There was no light, no vivid sight.. everything was in pitch dark.

She stopped for a moment and take a deep breath. Her sight can't see anything but darkness. "I can't see anything.. What am I gonna do now.. oh god.."

Grabbing her bag behind her back, she used her sense of touch to find something she can use. Her heavy breathing continues.

"Bingo!" Her hands felt a figure of a flashlight as she dug deeper inside her back pack.

She used her hands to find the switch of the flashlight. She turned it on and the light straightforwardly reflected on a chalkboard. "Is this a classroom? I thought I was on a hospital?" She looked around with the flashlight as her only source of light. The blackboard suddenly had some writings on it, in flash of a glitch effect: "Player no. 4, you are currently ranked 3rd." - She looked upon the writing. "Ranked third? So there must be two or more players aside from me?" then a door opens, leading her out of that classroom set up.

The rain stopped pouring when she get outside that room. It brought back the starry night in that dead place, in a snap. "I'm puzzled. What's the mechanics of this game?" She asked herself. "I think I need a gun or something to kill monsters here."

As she said those words, a glitch effect occurred in front of her. Leaving her with a gun, a pistol, after the transition. "Cool! I think I remembered why I love this game."

She grabbed the gun and continued walking, feeling fully-geared.

Treading grasses on that empty town, she saw another woman wearing the same suit like hers on a plain area. The girl made her felt like a perilous warning.. another monster, again – just like in the abandoned hospital a while ago. She pointed her gun, aiming to shoot her.

"This girl must be like the recent monster I've encountered." The girl she was about to shoot ran towards her. She was holding the trigger, tighter and tighter, as the girl comes nearer in her sight.

"Don't shoot me! Please! I am player number 2!"

Stella pointed her gun down.

"Player number two?"

The girl stopped running when she was in front of Stella.

"Yes. I am also a player of this ultra-reality game. My name is Samantha. And you are..?"

Player number 2, Samantha, stretched her arm as if she was asking for a hand shake but Stella ignored her gesture. There was a doubt deep inside of her. "Show me something that will prove your words." She said as she pointed the gun into

Samantha's head.

Samantha take her bag off and looked for something. Digging deeper, until she has shown a letter; sealed with the words—"for Samantha"

"Every player in this game has this. The official game pass."

Stella put her gun down as she concluded everything she's doubting of. "Okay. Identity confirmed. Nice meeting you, Samantha."

Samantha smiled as Stella insisted the handshake just now. She reached out for the gesture.

"Oh god, thank you. What's your name?"

"I'm Stella. Player number 4."

"Good. Let's finish this game together.. come on, Let's go this way." Then they headed east. Both of them walked in unison, heading their journey into nothingness.

Upon walking down the dead town, they reached a dark tunnel. Samantha shook her head, "No. I'm not going there. It's totally dark. What if there's something there?"

Stella shown a feeling of grimace. "What—?"

"Let's go back. I don't like the ambiance here." Samantha was about to take a turn when the tunnel produced a loud, howling sound. They both know it came from the inside. Stella and Samantha gulped as they know they were in the first level. "Oh no.. this tunnel was the first monster stop." Said Samantha.

Red-colored eyes suddenly became visible as each monster arises one by one. Amidst the darkness of the tunnel, all can be seen were their eyes, like constellations in a dark sky. "Fuck. These are ghouls. Players call it Boomers. Prepare your gun, Stella."

The total darkness deep inside the place matched an ambiance of horror and fright. Both of the players could hear the sound of terror and monsters, ready to catch them alive.

"On a count of three, we'll fire them together. okay?" Samantha aimed her gun into the tunnel. The howling sound continues.

"O-okay.." Stella aimed her gun and gulped as she knew the game is starting to get intense.

A roaring sound devoured the whole place as Boomers came out of the tunnel in bulk. Their grey colored skin blended in the night sky. Their sharp claws and fangs etched a mark on their every step, approaching Stella and Samantha. They come to them like wolves, ready to eat their food.

"THREE!" Samantha shouted as she started firing her gun towards the beasts. Stella followed her by pulling the trigger of her firearm, then reloading them, repeatedly. Piece by piece, Boomers became ashes as bullets touch their skin—like burnt papers and coals. The firearms do their thing, with its bullets continuously firing, infinite.

Boomers came in larger quantities. Samantha and Stella take steps backwards as they continued shooting their enemies. "They were too many!" Stella said without stopping her gun from shooting. "Just.. Fireeeee!" Samantha shouted, without looking anywhere but from boomers.

The howling sound became louder and louder as both of them were now running backwards. Their continuous shooting was getting faster.
