Chapter 28

"So? Who sent you?" Reis asked while finishing the bandage on Jill's hand.

It wasn't a deep cut, so it was easy to cure. It's just that, Reis felt disgusted after learning that Jill just licked the blood away, so it took him more than five minutes to finish.

Peterson, who was still being interrogated, gulped before parting his lips to speak.

"I… I don't know who…"

"Ah? Are you sh*tting me?" Jill turned his piercing gaze to Peterson.

It was so sharp that Peterson wanted to cry again.

"N-no, really… I don't know who made the job. I just received a mail one day and I did as what it says."

This was a fact.

Peterson lives far away from the University. He had normal house and normal life. He wasn't one who had a criminal record.

But as he said earlier, he badly needed money right now.

His wife is sick and he had two children to take care of.

Then, one day, he received a mail. It was in an expensive-looking envelope, and it was left right outside their doorstep.

Of course he was tempted.

If it's just spying, then he can do it. It's even perfect because the pay is high.

But now… he just wanted to hole up in his house and find a decent job while taking care of his family.

"Ha…" he heard a deep sigh from one side.

And there, he saw the smoking man on the doorway, looking down on him like he's just some kind of bug.

He already realized this earlier, but… these people are not the least bit normal. They're not the average students that you can see anywhere.

He knows of the university. Of course, who doesn't know of the top university.

But all he know about this university is its good reputation and achievements. He never heard any issues arise in connection to the university. Well, there was one 5 years ago, but it died down in just a month, so, Peterson can't really remember much of that issue.

But that aside, he never thought that the university would be hiding this kind of people. They're insane.

"So, are you telling us that you accepted the job without knowing anything?" Kane asked in disbelief.

Peterson vigorously nodded his head, trying so hard to convince them that he really didn't know anything.

"Do you have the mail with you?" Cale asked from his corner.

"I-I have it in my pocket." Peterson answered.

When he was just about to move his hand to take it out, he realized that he was still being seized by that little kid earlier. He was informed that these students are younger than him by just a year or so, but it was really difficult to move. He wondered how that little body managed to store great strength.

Aoi, who was the one seizing him, had no difficulties on doing so. He just chewed on his gum as he remained on his snake-like position.

"Aoi, take it from his pocket and hand it to me." Cale said but Aoi just pouted and didn't move an inch.

"But I'm enjoying this position. I don't want to let go yet."

He liked the feeling of hindering someone. He liked how he can stop Peterson's every movement even though he's bigger than him. It's not that he have inferiority complex for bigger people. Its just that, he liked the struggled look on their faces. It was satisfying.

While Aoi was refusing, Prof had already started to move.

He lifted his hand and reached for Peterson's pockets. Then, he pulled out a crumpled envelope and stood up to bring it to Cale.

He passed right through Chess who was just silently watching everything unfold before his eyes.

The moment the envelope reached Cale, Prof turned around and stood still.

He rested his hands on his hips as he reminded everyone.

"Don't forget that we still have an order to do."

"Oh, that's right."

"I almost forgot."

"Ah, I'm tired already…"

Everyone's comment made Prof sigh.

He then turned to look at Cale before glancing back at Peterson.

"Cale will be left behind." He stated.

Jill was the first to react.

"Aren't we going to guard a board member? Don't they always require all of us?" he asked.

In their years of serving the university, this is one of the things that they noticed.

They can do the other orders by pair, alone or by groups of three and more, but when it comes to guarding a board member or any important personnel, they always request for each and every one of them.

They didn't know the reason why, but they'll find out soon.

Right now, if they leave behind Cale, it would mean they didn't follow the order. That would be a breach on the contract. In short, they'd be eliminated.

So, it's definitely a no.

But Prof had something else running in his mind.

"Well, don't we have a 25-year-old man over there?" he stated.

Everyone turned to look at Peterson, who had a nervous look on his face.

'Don't tell me…' Peterson though of something awful.

And that awful idea came to life in just a second.

"Yes. We'll have him replace Cale. Just for today."

"Hmn… if that's the case, then fine." Jill agreed without much issue.

Chess, who is sitting comfortably in the couch, was the next one Prof pointed out.

"You're coming too."

Of course, Chess already felt that when Jill said that they always require each and everyone of them. But still, he wanted to refuse. It sounds bothersome.

"But didn't you say that if I become the class representative, you would exempt me from every class activity?" he still didn't forget how Prof coaxed him into being the class representative.

Although he never really did anything befitting that of a class rep, he still hold on to Prof's words. But what Prof said next piqued his interest.

"Well, this isn't a class activity. This is considered personal investigation. Don't you want to know the truth behind the pieces, too?" Prof was right on point.

Chess was interested in knowing the identities of other pieces, if there really are any. And, he wants to know the root of this unique university structure.

What was the Chairman thinking when he made this interesting setup? Chess Pieces and such… it's just truly interesting for Chess.

So, in order to show his approval, he flashed his blinding innocent smile.

Peterson, who caught a glimpse of that smile, was very confused and nervous for Chess.

'Why is a pure person here?' he thought. 'Is he, perhaps, a captive too?'

His thoughts started to waver.

He wanted to hurry and escape here. If possible, he would bring this innocent man along. But when he thinks about it again, he heard that this person was also a part of the class.

'Maybe he's crazy too?'

With that thought in mind, Peterson took one more glance towards Chess.

Chess still had that blinding innocent smile on his face. Prof and the others were already used to it, but Peterson was deeply affected by that smile.

'What poor soul… he seemed clueless that this class is full of crazy people!'

Peterson started to make escape plan inside his head. This time, he made sure to include Chess in the escape.

'Just wait… I'll take you out of this hell with me!'

He was so fired up on saving Chess, who looked like a lost angel in hell, from the devils. Of course, Chess had no idea of what he was thinking. When he saw Peterson staring at him with his slightly teary eyes, he just gave him a confused look.

"Okay, I will be in the same car as the VIP, as usual." Prof started, pertaining the board member as a VIP.

When Chess heard this, he tilted his head to look at Prof.

"So, Prof is going as well?" he asked.

Prof just nodded his head. Jill wasn't kidding when he said everyone of them was required. When he said everyone, he meant everyone. Professor or not, as long as he's part of the Pawns.

"Reis and Aoi would be in the front car. Kane and Jill will both be on motorcycles, one for each side of the VIP car. And the rest, Syn, Chess, as well as this man, will be on the back car, following behind the VIP car. Clear?"

"Clear." Everyone almost answered in unison.

Peterson immediately celebrated in his thoughts.

He is together with the innocent man, and the other man, the one whose name is Syn, who seemed to be a sleepyhead. It'll be easy to trick him, or maybe, just push him out of the car.

Peterson started to plan.

After getting away from here, he would bring the innocent student in a safe place and then take his family to a faraway land.

All he have to do is to follow their instructions, ride the car, trick the other person, and then drive the car away with the innocent student.

It's easy.

Very easy.

However…

The 'other' person was Syn. The sleepyhead who seemed easy to trick was none other than the lazy and indifferent Syn.

Would he be alright?
