Chapter 48 : A Lead to Follow

My mother’s words made no sense. My baby was right in my arms. I looked down at Vira. But she wasn’t there. My arms tightened around myself automatically. Like I thought she would just be in there if I held on tighter.

“Varon,” I murmured, my voice breaking as reality came crashing down on me.

The next few hours passed like a whirlwind. I recovered entirely. I could feel that my body was back to what it had been. I was strong and swift again. I could shift, and reach my wolf, and would be able to call her to me in a moment if I needed to.

But I couldn’t move. I was still in the seat that I had been lifted to from the bed. I saw Varon watching me carefully, glancing at me out of the corner of his eye. But I couldn’t care less. I should be able to reach for her. And I couldn’t. I couldn’t grasp a hold of her thoughts. But this was so wrong. I should be able to hear her.
