Chapter 2

About a month later, in the hospital.

Outside the emergency room, everyone waited solemnly.

Robert came at that time, and even though he appeared to be in a rush, his attire was impeccable.

Robert cast a worried glance in the direction of the emergency room door. "How long has Miss Sonmerfield been in there?" He inquired Arno.

"Miss Sonmerfield's condition is worse than anticipated, and she passed out on the way." Arno replied with concern, "Dr. Marian is still not here."

"Isn't she back already?"

"According to her assistant, she had settled down. It seems that her location won't be a mystery any longer. But we have no idea why we can't reach her at this point."

Arno answered honestly. "Miss Sonmerfield is being revived by the other attendings. It ought to persist for a while."

The atmosphere was tense, and the subordinates standing nearby could feel it. They all knew how much their boss adored Miss Sonmerfield.

There were even rumors said that Mr. Snow, who had been married to Mrs. Snow for ten years, had divorced her to marry Miss Sonmerfield.

Robert suddenly heard a flurry of footsteps and a familiar voice. He then saw a woman surrounded by a crowd wearing a white coat and mask.

Despite barely a month passed, this woman has only revealed one set of eyes. He and Arno still could recognize her.

Why was she here?

He made a crazy assumption at this moment.

Page drew Robert's attention. "You're blocking the way." She spoke while giving him an uncaring look as if she didn't know him.

The dean explained, "Mr. Snow, this is Doctor Maria. Could you please move aside? The patient is under emergency."

"Yeah. You better not blame me if I miss the surgery and the patient passes away." Page sneered.

Robert's fists were clenched. At that moment, even Arno believed that there was no hope for Miss Sonmerfield's life.

Robert had some doubts that Page would save her rival's life.

"Is she Doctor Marian?" Robert asked the dean.

The dean assumed that Robert just didn't trust Doctor Marian. He nodded in response, "Please don't worry, Mr. Snow. Doctor Marian is outstanding and experienced. She just underwent a major operation a few days ago. And she can raise the success rate from 10% to 50%."

However, there was still a 50/50 possibility that this surgery would fail. It would be easy for Page to do the trick.

Page encircled herself with her arms, adopting a relaxed position, and said, "If you don't want me to do the surgery, I can let someone else do it."

"How sure are you?"

The dean had told Robert previously, but he inquired again.

Page sneered, "It's already been said, fifty percent."

She didn't turn her head away when their eyes met.

Robert had never seen such boldness in her eyes before.

In his impression, Page was always mild and virtuous, like an indoor flower that relied on him for survival.

Or perhaps in the previous ten years, he had never really gotten to know her.

He stepped aside and said, "Go ahead."

Arno wanted to say something, but he held back.

It seemed like there was nothing they could do at this point but let Page do the surgery.

Page gave him a glance with a faint smile, then she entered the emergency room.

The door was closed again.

Robert seemed to be thinking about something with his eyes downcast.

When Page walked into the emergency room, Vita Sonmerfield's face had the expected expression of panic.

"Page Lynd! How did you get here?"

The anesthesia was so strong that Vita couldn't move her body. Her face was as pale as white paper. Now it looked even worse.

Page always knew Vita was Robert's mistress.

To deal with the elders, she served as his apparent wife while Vita was his true love.

She thought they would soon be married.

But it was no longer her concern.

Vita would have passed away long ago if she had minded.

Page grimly picked up the scalpel and told her, "You'd best follow my lead, or you'll be dead."

"Get away! I don't want you to do the surgery! Let me see Robert!" Vita yelled.

The other doctors uneasily exchanged looks as they saw the patient's lack of cooperation. "Doctor Marian, do you need...?"

"No, I have limited time." Page sneered and said to Vita, "That's not up to you."

"Get out! I don't want you to do my surgery!"

"The patient is too noisy. Please increase the anesthetic dose." The doctor next to her followed the instruction.

"All right."

Soon Vita fell asleep, and the operating room was at last calm.

Vita dozed off while still sporting a frightened expression.

The other doctors praised Page's decisiveness. Her composed and assured demeanor could give off a sense of total security.

Seven hours later, the lights in the emergency room went off.

When Page opened the door, she saw Robert.

He had been waiting there the entire time.

"Is it successful?"

"Yes."

Page took off her mask and answered icily.

Hearing their conversation, Arno was speechless. Before this, they were a couple, but now they were talking like strangers.

Robert, though, is already perceived by Page as a stranger. She was too exhausted and wanted to leave quickly instead of saying one more word.

However, Robert grabbed her hand as she approached him. He walked her over to a corner.

All of his subordinates displayed perplexed faces because none of them knew Page. "Mr. Snow only wanted to question Doctor Marian about something relevant to the surgery," Arno explained.

But why was he holding her hand?

Maybe Mr. Snow was excessively concerned for Miss Sonmerfield's safety.

The crowd could only guess so under their doubt.

After they reached the corner, Robert let go of her hand.

Robert blocked in front of her.

"Why Doctor Marian would be you?"

Robert directly questioned.

"Looking for something to pass the time." Page answered calmly.

Robert stared at her cold face, remembering how kind and gentle she had previously been. Suddenly, he became irate.

He took a deep breath.

"How is Vita?"

"She's currently not in danger, as I've already stated. But she can't survive unless she has a matching heart."

She learned early on that Vita, Robert's first love, had been born with a congenital heart condition. She was extremely frail and never found a matching heart.

If she hadn't become Robert's fiancée so early, Vita and Robert would have become lovers.

Thinking about it, she felt a bit bored.

"I got it, thanks." Robert pursed his lips as he stated this.

"You're welcome. I get paid to do this after all."

Answering his questions was only out of duty as a doctor.

Seeing her unconcerned look, Robert stared at her and asked, "What kind of a person are you?"

She no longer resembled who she once was.

Page replied with a smile, "I don't need to respond given that we are divorced. Why not just concentrate on your true love."

Robert pursed his lips and tried to add something while Page was already walking away.

It's a dashing back.

"Boss, Miss Sonmerfield is awake and she's crying to see you." Arno hurried over and said.

"I see," Robert said with slightly shifting eyelids.
