To Sleep In The Sea Of Time

This is a story of a guy who loses everything, and then gets it back. Same old new world story, just a different kind of story teller. *** They took away our hunter tags. They had us grow our hair. They gave us a new brand, when we were over there. They staged us out of Dragur, East of the Olim Horn. I guess they call us Slaves, but no one calls us much anymore. There is no fun in killing. I don't want to do it anymore. Karn brought Sorrow. Pookie brought Fear. Milk brought the fly boys. They did work in Undia. I worked mostly clandestine. Some Legends I should not say. We played with better wands. I could use the extra pay. Did Mara give the order? Did venom pay the way? They said we were slaying demons, but it was kind of hard to tell. There is no fun in killing. I don't want to do it anymore. This was before HALO, and Codex was king. Hej atop the rider, he never felt a thing. When our rider caught a spell, and both the mages killed. It pitched us over sideways on some cold Sylph hill. My back felt like it was broken, my legs I could not feel. I kept on slaying demons, but it was kind of hard to tell. There is no fun in killing. I don't want to do it anymore. I never did heal up right from injuries sustained Officially in Torin, unofficially we train. I remember all their faces. They dream about me still. I guess I'm slaying demons, but it's kind of hard to tell. There no fun in killing. I don't want to do it anymore. I speak the cold logistic, that old boys speak so well. Veni, Vedi, Vici. I'll see you in Hel. Maybe it's bravado, or an unspeakable guilt. That village, they were demons, but it was kind of hard to tell. There is no fun in killing. I don't wanna to do it anymore. I've done plenty. What is one more? -Corb Lund *** Come guess me this riddle. What beats shire leaves and fiddle? What is hotter than pleasures touch, and whiter than cream? What best wets his whistle? What is clearer than crystal? What is sweeter than honey and stronger than steam? What will make the lame walk? What will make the dumb talk? What is the elixir of life and philosopher's stone? And what helped Pookie-Baba dig up a tunnel, that runs from Shalamanda to West-Torin? When you are digging a crater, It is the best thing in nature, for sinking your sorrows and raising your joys. Sometimes I wonder, if lightning and thunder, is made out of the plunder, of the reddest hiski and oils. *** If you can keep your head when all about you, are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too. If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise. If you can dream, and not make dreams your master. If you can think, and not make thoughts your aim. If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two impostors just the same. If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken, twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, and stoop and build them up with worn-out tools. If you can make one heap of all your winnings, and risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss and lose, and start again at your beginnings, and never breathe a word about your loss. If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew, to serve your turn long after they are gone, and so hold on when there is nothing in you; Except the Will which says to them ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, nor walk with Kings, nor lose the common touch. If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you. If all men count with you, but none too much. If you can fill the unforgiving minute, with sixty seconds worth of distance, run. Yours is the World and everything that’s in it, and which is more you’ll be a Man, my son. - Rudyard Kipling

Arrow after arrow is released but it feels like they are sailing over to it in comparison to how fast it moved.

It moved to my left, it's right and pivoted dashing towards me.

The white coloring extended all the way across it's back and the blue covered it's front.

It moved so fast it took me a moment to register it's figure, making it seem as if it just disappeared.

I released two more arrows after adjusting slightly right and then booked it going south.

Using the tip of the arrow to open a cut in my thumb I made an 'okay' symbol squeezing the blood out and sending pulses shaping it into a circle.

I didn't know if it was all the practice or that my life was on the line but I made the circle rather quickly and attempted to fly off.

I say attempt because the hairy baboon launched itself from the north ten yards away.

It was positioned directly behind me.

His size was slightly over six feet and moved faster then me meaning this hit was going to hurt.

I was right.

He hit me with a shoulder that knocked the wind out of me.

The Baboons human like grin turned into a a howl of surprise.

That hit should have shattered all of my bones but I was flying back with a knocked arrow and a smirk.

I release the arrow in mid flight, the energy coursing through my body making up for the crap position I was in.

The arrow penetrated an eye but stopped quickly, I had the element of surprise but it wasn't going to last long.

It howled loudly and pulled the arrow out.

Unlike other beasts this ones actions can be described as intentional.

It had some major control of its body and considering how long it was breathing in it had some huge lungs.

I was able to nulify the majority of the impact by using a mana platform in mid air to leap in the opposing direction.

Still winded I could taste it's fur in my mouth.

I knocked another arrow while pulses of mana morphed my blood into into a wobbly dual circle array in between me and baboon.

It got down on all fours when it sensed the concentrated energy in front of me.

Making itself a small target it began to leap towards me with a fluidity that scared me.

I loosed two arrows aiming them at the beasts general direction.

As they flew past the dual circle array a thin wisp of my mana was emitted and latched on to the silver and propelled it faster through the air.

With a few strong pulses of mana followed by a steady stream of energy into the array I could alter the trajectory slightly.

One arrow forced it to slow down and another found its thick thigh.

It felt like I was fighting a body building baboon that moved like a jungle cat but faster.

It didn't take its time removing the arrow, ripping it out quickly and moving to avod the incoming volley.

I had twenty arrows left, the hunting bow is perfect for the situation, it was short and prioritized rate of fire over distance.

The beast still closes the distance while taking two arrows to its right shoulder.

I felt it trying to move the arrows while they are in the air with its own mana but they are already embued with my energy and plenty of it making it a fools errand.

One more arrow pierced it forearm before it got within a ten yard range of me.

It expected me to run, not calmly draw another arrow from the quiver.

I took aim and fired but this time the arrow went through the center of the array.

The arrow was launched and the wood shaft shattered and the metal tip went flying like a bullet.

The Baboon fell to the right but its left shoulder was pierced.

The entrance wound was as small as the arrow head but the exit wound was as large as a fist and the area around it immediately began to redden.

The array was disrupted and collapsed but it did its job.

I drop the bow, quickly unsheathing both Ho'thaws and Jashas dagger.

I hold them in a hammer grip and dart towards the beast with my eyes blazing with mana as I used 'fast thinking' to its limit.

It didn't bother howling a challenge as I shifted gears and appeared in front of it before it could even bend it's knees.

I aimed for the head, it was a smaller target but would end this quickly.

The downward slash was interrupted by what looked exactly like a karate obie.

It's two front knuckles on its right hand snapped forward while his left arm rose to meet the dagger.

I ate that punch like Christmas ham, but the energy flowing through the blade in my right hand allowed me to leave a deep cut all the way to the bone on it's forearm.

My body bounced twice before landing and rolling a couple more feet.

Popping up I assumed a defensive position while doing my best to draw in air, it wasn't working.

I positioned my blade pointing towards his fist at the last moment but the hilt was driven into my stomach.

Its front knuckle made contact with my blade, it was like trying to pierce a wall.

Its mana coursed through the blade and hit me hard.

I was gasping for air.

There was no pain, that would come later.

Right now I needed to breath, it felt like my legs are ready to give out on me and the shock from the initial clash was waring off.

My body was starting to send the pain signals.

'Come on, come on' the seconds felt like minutes and fast thinking was working against me.

The effects of the chemicals produced by my body is excentuated due to the pressure applied to my brain when using 'fast thinking'.

Baboon moved as if my fast thinking and his injuries didn't exist.

Even with my slowed down perception of the world I could see the six foot primate dashing towards me.

I did nothing because I could do nothing, I needed air.

I sent pulses of mana throughout my body but they all moved around the area the beasts struck as if it punched a hole through me.

The hilt of the blades are crossed in front of me, I can barely move my upper body to keep up with its movements as it draws closer.

I paid special attention to it's steps and how it moved my lower body lowering, my knees are bent ready to take the blow.

It was in front of me in the blink of an eye lowering both it's fists from above, it was at this moment that a desperate inhale could be heard.

As I filled my lungs my stiff body listened to my commands and my knees bent even lower, I pushed off my toes as the fists came down.

I was so low my chin could scrape the ground.

I slashed with my left arm across it's left leg as I passed underneath it, making it lean to the left after what looked like a bomb went off where it slammed it's fists.

'Close' I didn't know if Ava said that or I did but my heart was racing none the less.

The accumulation of small injuries made it hesitate before rising, and that was all I needed.

Sprinting with the same wide steps that it took moments earlier I was now the one on top bringing both blades down one after the other across the jugular on both sides.

I didn't mean to slice across it so cleanly as a matter of fact I was aiming at it's neck from the back but it suddenly turned towards me at the last minute.

Instead of clasping its wound it did something I would never have expected.

A Buck Norris roundhouse kick that looked like it came out of a martial arts film came when I slashed for the third time and missed.

It leaned its upper body back while raising its right leg it's heal smashing into my shoulder.

The back of it's leg sent me flying for the second time.

I was dragged by the momentum on my stomach, stabilizing myself on all fours, as I slid backwards I kept my eye on the baboon.

It was strong, like a step before Kata strong.

If I didn't have all the steel and silver things would have ended quickly.

The bleeding quickly stopped and I could see an orange color being breathed out of it's mouth like a thin fog.

It's lone pupil had an orange glow as well, making me curse the fact that the shoulder used to stop that kick was unresponsive.

I couldn't even tell the damage as the same sensation that numbed my body earlier persisted but this time on my shoulder.

I stand up quickly and raise the lone dagger in front of me while my right arm hung limp.

It didn't immediately rush me like before making me smile from ear to ear, 'bad choice' I thought.

Four tendrils quickly formed into a small grenade behind me as the pause in the battle dragged on.

It continued to glare at me until finally it opened it's mouth.

"Human" the amount of contempt in that one word spoke volumes about my situation.

'What the fuck'? I thought but my face was as blank as ever, the same face I would use to take a dump.

It wasn't Olim or Terra but the Language of the House Inka.

I didn't have the inclination to sift through all the memories to create a proper response so I did the reasonable thing.

I created another grenade.
