The world in which Dad and I found ourselves was something completely out of my control.
“Would you like anything to drink or eat?” Anna asked.
Dad and I looked up from the news we were watching in the sitting room of my suite.
Anna stood in the doorway, where, it seemed, she had been hovering since we had arrived. I couldn’t sneeze without her at my elbow with a tissue.
“I think we’re good. Dad?” I asked.
Dad shook his head and held up his water bottle. “I’m good.”
“If you need anything, just ring the bell.” Anna left and closed the door behind her.
I looked over at the small button that rang a bell somewhere in the house that alerted Anna that we needed something. When my eyes met Dad’s, we laughed.
“Doesn’t this feel like something out of a movie?” I asked.
He nodded. “Feels odd. Not where I want to live out my days, I tell ya.”
