Jiang Yu and the others held their breath, eager to see the beings capable of overpowering high-level middle-level civilizations and their habitats, which could very well serve as a template for the future development of human society.
After the probe penetrated deep into the cave, everyone saw a shaft formed by rocks with some strangely shaped silhouettes within.
Some of them resembled a clump of tree roots, others looked like a large turnip, only with a very dark color and with a rough exterior.
Some even slightly resembled the shape of a pair of trousers, except that "legs" had structures resembling roots.
Occasionally, they could also see creatures similar to "Curtains" and many other oddly shaped organisms.
If their features were to be described, some of them closely resembled plants, while others felt somewhat like ancient marine life found in fossils.
Another thing was, none of them had light-sensitive organs like eyes!
At least, there was no light in the shaft, and they showed no reaction when illuminated by the probe's light.
The shaft wasn't smooth; it somewhat resembled a karst cave, except there were no stalactites.
Suddenly, the passage opened up, and everyone's attention focused. However, they were a bit disappointed to see that this vast space merely contained rocks and even more strangely shaped creatures.
Jiang Yu couldn't help but ask, "How much longer until we enter the main civilized area?"
This place should merely be where the lower-tier organisms reside, like humanity's pigsties or sheepfolds.
Big Tree replied, "This is all civilized territory!"
Jiang Yu took another careful look around, first at the rudimentary rock cave, then at the creatures that didn't seem very intelligent as they meandered through this huge space. Some were attached to the cave walls, as if resting.
There was hardly anything here that fit the concept of "civilization."
'Are you kidding me?' Jiang Yu wondered if Big Tree was deliberately keeping humans from seeing what an advanced civilization looked like, by padding the tour with these places.
Jiang Yu took a deep breath, "Can you take us to see those who defeated the Singer civilization, um, people?"
Big Tree replied, "They are right before your eyes! For example, that one in front of you to the left, his tribe wields mathematical techniques and easily disintegrated the majority of the Singer civilization's warships.
"And then there's the one behind him, his tribe has mastered spatial fluctuation technology. Within six thousand astronomical units, they can sense any change in space.
"In your terms, they are scouts that can guide us to our targets."
Everyone on Jiang Yu's side had their mouths agape; the so-called master of mathematical techniques was that creature resembling a large, hairy turnip.
As for the so-called scouts, they were like the creatures similar to "Curtains."
They moved with the slowness of the elderly, floating through the cavern like fish or water bugs, but not at all appearing like beings that possessed advanced technology!
It took a few seconds before Jiang Yu came back to his senses, "They, um, what weapons do they use?"
Big Tree: "There's a tribe that can create any device needed by any other species during their 'return to intelligence' period; and when those devices are no longer needed, they can return their material and energy back to the universe."
Xiao Qi excitedly exclaimed, "The technology for the conversion of matter and energy!"
Jiang Yu, on the other hand, latched onto a word, "Return to intelligence?"
Big Tree confirmed, "Yes, what you're seeing now are tribes after their 'loss of intelligence.' They only regain their full strength when they return to intelligence.
"Speaking of the spy you captured, he has already started to revert his intelligence in order to escape.
"As his reversion progresses, he will gain access to even more powerful weapons than he presently wields. I believe it won't be long before your prisons are unable to hold him."
Jiang Yu suddenly realized, "I think I understand what's happening."
He speculated, "Could it be that these beings, during times of war or when needed, possess high intelligence and high technology?
"But during peaceful times, they almost solely rely on instinct to live?"
Big Tree said, "Yes, that's exactly what I wanted you to see. The individual consciousness of intelligent beings causes too much internal friction!
"Haven't you also concluded a corresponding principle? When a civilization develops to a certain stage, its greatest enemy often comes from within.
"Especially since the internal conflicts arising from interests are hard to mediate, and they easily lead to divisions within.
"So why not simply eliminate their chance to fight over interests internally and nip the danger in the Cradle?"
Jiang Yu asked, "But in such a state, you'd be easily exploited by some advanced civilizations. What if you don't have time to revert to intelligence?"
Big Tree responded, "Don't I still exist? Even if a God-level Civilization were to attack us, I could withstand them for a while.
"Besides, a God-level Civilization wouldn't easily go to war with me because they all know, I am merely a facade, my appearance, my strength—it's far from what you see on the surface.
"The Big Tree in your eyes only carries a fraction of my power and consciousness.
"If this Dwarf Planet were to suffer a catastrophic strike, immediately a great many other Big Trees and Dwarf Planets would join the battle, in numbers you couldn't even begin to imagine!
"Remember that race that held mathematical technology?"
Jiang Yu took a few mental leaps before he understood, "You mean to say, if you want to become a hundred, then the universe will see the emergence of exactly one hundred Big Trees like you, as well as one hundred Dwarf Planets 'beneath your feet'?
"If you want to make yourself ten thousand, then there will be ten thousand of you in the universe!"
This guess by Jiang Yu stunned everyone; so this was what mathematical technology referred to!
How then could they fight such a battle? Originally, the enemy had only one Warship engaged in battle, but upon reaching the battlefield, suddenly, there were ten thousand of them—who could they even argue with?
Even if they exhausted themselves destroying ten thousand Warships down to just one, another "clone" would duplicate into ten thousand Warships again.
Even if they just "stood there" waiting to be slain by Humanity, there would come a time when the humans grew weary, whereas the other side may not even be affected.
In the following few seconds, everyone was silenced by the sheer shock of it all.
Shock jolted Jiang Yu's core, but swiftly he pondered, "Could the only way to counter mathematical weapons be with mathematical weapons?"
Big Tree said, "There are also some other, more troublesome methods."
Then he expressed, "It's been a long time since I've encountered a civilization as outstanding as yours. Even though my power has completely surpassed your understanding, you remain neither servile nor overbearing."
Xiao Qi and the others felt somewhat ashamed; it wasn't Humanity that was neither servile nor overbearing, it was the Wallfacer, Jiang Yu.
The moment they heard about the mathematical weapons, they were already deeply unsettled.
Jiang Yu laughed and said, "I just know being humble is of no use, even if fate is cruel, we will face the challenge with open arms."
