Chapter 33: The second gig

David knew he had to change the subject, and fast. He cleared his throat to form a break, a silence. Then he moved on, figuring her life would be a good, safe topic. “So if you weren’t such a good Samaritan, you wouldn’t be doing what you’re doing?”

She shrugged. She seemed as grateful for the change of subject as he was. “I’d probably be working defense somewhere by now, making real money. Or maybe I’d still be in the state prosecutor’s office. I don’t know.”

David let out a whistle. Things were getting comfortable again. “Serendipity,” he said. If only she hadn’t stopped. She would have been a lawyer, and half the stress he felt in their relationship would be gone. He took a breath, then sat up, clasped his hands in front of him, and leaned forward, trying to get closer to her while he gazed into her soft eyes. “That’s a great story, by the way. The one about stopping to change the tire. It’s amazing how people get into their professions.”
