"Why do you always thank me? We promised to do everything together, remember? And we will be one big happy family soon, don't forget. Henceforth don't thank me for anything."
Pei Yueran agreed, "You're right. Fine, I'll remember."
Then Li Chuanmo's voice changed to a tone Pei Yueran knew all too well meant teasing. "Actually let me change that. You can thank me, but in a different way. Let's be creative. You're curious right? Should I give you more details?"
She just knew he would be up to something. She giggled like a teenager, "No you're right. There's no need for thanks between us."
"You're no fun." Li Chuanmo grumbled in fake disappointment, while Pei Yueran laughed.
"Don't you have work to do?"
"Now you're chasing me away." Li Chuanmo said in a singsong voice, "Is she tired of me already? Oh what to do?"
"Get out of here Chuan, be serious." She was enjoying this so much that she almost split her sides. He was getting more proficient at making her laugh.
They spent the next two hours joking around and laughing. Li Chuanmo didn't get to signing the document until after Han Yichen came back. He spoke to him, asked how the exam went and invited him for a weekend date.
The plan was to make sure his mum was dragged along of course.
Han Yichen agreed eagerly.
It was after the call ended that Pei Yueran spoke to him. "So how was the exam?"
"Fine." was the reply.
And indeed it was. Apart from the slight disturbance another exam candidate tried to make at the beginning, accusing him of sitting in the wrong place, everything went fine.
"Good job son. Let's go." She planned to take him out for lunch to celebrate.
She turned on the ignition, but then suddenly clapped her hands. "Ah, I forgot. Principal Shen wanted to see us."
He called her yesterday and requested a meeting today, after the exam.
Although they would not know the results of the scholarship exam until a week later, the school-leaving exam results were released a few days ago, and Han Yichen was in first place, both in the district and city wide.
Already, she had received three calls from different schools inquiring about him and if he would be interested in studying at their school.
Even the principal of First International had phoned her, asking them to reconsider leaving the school. When she politely told him that they had moved out of city A already, he expressed that it was such a pity. They had to give up a good seedling just like that.
She suspected it was because of this that Principal Shen wanted to see them.
When they got to his office, they were allowed in immediately by the secretary.
"Good day Principal Shen." Pei Yueran greeted politely, while Han Yichen bowed slightly without speaking.
"You've come? Sit down, sit down." Principal Shen gestured eagerly. It was obvious to everyone that the old man was excited.
"Student Yichen, congratulations. You did a good job in the school-leaving examinations. It will be a great pleasure to have you in our school. Keep it up." He gushed.
Han Yichen smiled and nodded. "Thank you sir."
Turning to Pei Yueran, he continued. "The reason I invited you was to inform you that the School Board met two days ago. Due to Han Yichen's outstanding school-leaving exam results, they agreed to give him a partial scholarship for a year. Depending on his subsequent performance, the scholarship will be renewed yearly. Congratulations."
This meant that even if Han Yichen didn't pass the scholarship exam, he would still be entitled to a partial scholarship. Pei Yueran grinned from ear to ear, over the moon at the good news.
Han Yichen was very happy as well, even though his countenance did not change much.
The secretary came in at this time with cups of tea.
"Thank you very much Principal Shen." Pei Yueran said happily.
"Oh I didn't do anything. Student Yichen is the real MVP here. Just keep up the good work okay?"
When Han Yichen nodded, he continued, "By the way, how was the exam today?"
"It was okay sir."
Principal Shen felt a bit disappointed. Sounds like he found it difficult after all. Anyway it made sense. If it was so easy, the school would be running a charity instead.
"It's alright. Either way, you have a partial scholarship already, so you just need to work hard so as to maintain it.
"School resumes in two weeks, but you are expected at the dormitory one day before at the latest."
"Alright sir, thank you."
Pei Yueran also nodded, she would make sure he was ready by then.
"No problem. You can look forward to your time here. As you know, our school goes on several competitions a year, with amazing prices. Our extracurricular activities are also very developed. There will be no dull moment here, I assure you."
It looked like the principal was trying to make sure he doesn't change his mind. City M had very high educational standards, and although City A could not be compared to City M in that aspect, there was no way their first place candidate would not be a good fit for their school.
Even if he could not maintain the first place, he should not fall too far behind.
As a prestigious school in City M, Anping First Middle School was fiercely competitive and was frequently involved in competitions with other schools in the city and outside. They were always on the lookout for students with abilities— intellectual, artistic and athletic.
It was the reason the School Board was willing to give out this scholarship, in order to reel him in. Such a good seedling that came to them voluntarily should not be treated badly.
Shortly afterwards, they got up to leave. The Principal personally escorted them out of his office to show his sincerity.
"Have a nice day Ms. Pei. See you soon Yichen."
"Good bye sir."
On their way to the restaurant, Pei Yueran asked, "So how do you feel?"
"Happy." Han Yichen answered. Although he didn't doubt that he did well on the exam, he was happy his mom was happy about the partial scholarship. Besides, it felt good to be acknowledged.
"I'm proud of you Xiao Chen, always. Thank you for coming to me, for being my son." Pei Yueran suddenly felt emotional.
"Thank you for being my Mom." He said quietly, blinking his beautiful eyes at her.
Their mother-son moment was broken by a call from Li Yuchen.
"Yichen, I heard we will be staying at the dormitory." Li Yuchen wailed as soon as Han Yichen picked up.
The school had just sent his admission letter and requirements via email.
