"Let's meet at the City hospital same time tomorrow then." It was Li Chuanmo that spoke, while the others had no opinions. Qiao Mingran's face looked a bit better.
This time, she urged them to eat something before leaving. Pei Yueran was still not hungry, but she felt like making this woman who looked very vulnerable happy, so she nodded and asked for dessert.
The tiramisu cake she ordered was quickly brought in by the waiter. Qiao Mingran also ordered the same, while Gao Tinghua and Li Chuanmo politely declined.
As Pei Yueran ate, all three pairs of eyes were trained on her. Even Qiao Mingran forgot about the cake in front of her, she just wanted to look at her daughter more, as if to memorize her face.
Pei Yueran felt like it was the longest time she had spent eating a cake. She couldn't even remember what it tasted like.
Li Chuanmo took out his handkerchief and help her flick away a stray crumb of cake on her lower lip. She naturally leaned towards him to make it easier.
The sight burnt Gao Tinghua's eyes and he got up abruptly, "I'll be waiting outside Mother." He then left.
Pei Yueran had put down the dessert fork at this time and gotten up, "We would be leaving now Madam Gao. Thank you for your hospitality."
Qiao Mingran nodded and stood up too, "Thank you very much for taking the time out today. See you tomorrow."
When they got out of the room, Gao Tinghua was waiting outside the door, "Thank you very much for coming. And I'm sorry for my rude behavior the other day."
Pei Yueran nodded, while Li Chuanmo cleanly ignored him. He just couldn't bring himself to like this potential brother-in-law.
Of course, the feeling was mutual, but considering he was the one in the wrong and also the one in need of help, Gao Tinghua lowered his head and said a polite goodbye.
Not like Li Chuanmo responded this time either.
In the car, Pei Yueran mused, "So this was what you were being so secretive about."
Li Chuanmo asked, "Are you angry that I didn't tell you about it earlier?"
She shook her head, "It just came as a surprise. I don't know why it didn't occur to me. Especially since he once commented that I looked like his mother."
Li Chuanmo wanted to retort that he couldn't see any resemblance, but he didn't want to lie. They really had some similarities. So he said, "Just remember that you don't have to do anything you don't want to."
Pei Yueran spoke with an unreadable look in her brown eyes, "You know, I've never even considered that I was lost and not abandoned. I wonder why Mum and Dad told me that though. Or did I remember it wrong?"
The first and probably only time they talked about the circumstances of her discovery was many years ago, when her father was still alive, whilst telling her how she came to be adopted.
She couldn't remember much of what they said due to her shock at the time, but she had always thought he said something about picking her up her close to the orphanage and that she was looking as robust as a three-day old baby at the time.
That was why she thought she was abandoned near the orphanage at the age of three days. But now, she wondered if she was wrong.
"We can always ask Mother about this. But don't worry. First, nothing has been confirmed yet, and even if it turns out to be true, you have me to hold up the sky for you."
Pei Yueran smiled genuinely at his arrogant-sounding tone, "Thank you Chuan." This was her husband.
"I've told you to stop thanking me, or at least thank me in a way I would love to be thanked." Li Chuanmo was adamant about this. Her thanks usually made it sound as if he was doing her a favor, but he knew that she deserved much more.
She was the one that rescued him and gave him what he didn't even realize he was in desperate need of. She had become his safe harbor, and he felt like he owed her everything.
Pei Yueran's gratitude immediately evaporated. If she had to thank him in a way that would make her unable to feel her waist again, she would rather be labeled ungrateful.
"I take that back. Just drive."
Not only were they going to pick the boys, Director Zhou was also going back to City A. Her flight was for the evening, and she was only waiting for them to see her off.
That reminded Pei Yueran, "Can I ask you something Chuan?"
"Honey."
"What?"
"Call me Honey."
Pei Yueran rolled her eyes. "What is it about this pet name that you like so much?"
"You're sweeter than sugar and you give me so much healthy joy. I think Honey describes you perfectly, and I want to be that kind of person to you too."
Pei Yueran was touched, but she also felt compelled to remind, "But honey also has its disadvantages. For example, too much of it can make your stomach ache."
"In our case, you make my groin ache instead." He meant it literally. He had been in a heightened state almost constantly since their wedding night. Just a casual glance at her did wonders to his lower body.
Pei Yueran: "..."
She was shocked that he could even think up that statement, what more utter it. She turned red almost instantly.
Why did she never learn? If she was keeping count, the number of times Li Chuanmo had rendered her speechless with his straight face and unfiltered words were already in the hundreds, and they'd been married a little over a week!
She decided she'd just ignore him.
When he noticed that she was no longer talking to him, he took the initiative to hold her seemingly boneless hand, "Forget my words. What did you want to say earlier?"
His words reminded her, but she said, "Nevermind. I think it's a bit too serious, not exactly suitable for this ambience."
"Nothing is too suitable or unsuitable. You can ask me anything. Or is it about her?"
When Pei Yueran nodded, he said casually, "She has been handed over to the police. Since the murder happened in a different city, she will be charged for it separately.
My lawyer said she would only get a few years for what she did to you, but adding the murder charges, she could be sentenced to death. If she gets good lawyers, it could be changed to life imprisonment."
