Chapter 10: Leader

She gave me another weird look and James came up after us and rolled his eyes. "Seriously? Can you stop hitting on her for one second and focus?" I turned to him innocently. "Offering to shoot each other is considered hitting on her?" James crossed his arms. "It is if you're a masochist." Erin gasped in my head. 'He's on to us!! Quickly! Grab a brick and shove it in your mouth!'

I looked away from James and whispered to myself. "How is that going to help?" Erin spoke as if he shrugged. 'I don't know. But hey. You'll have a brick in your mouth so... There's that.' I shook my head and returned my attention to Molly, who was opening the door as if she had tuned us out. 'That bitch. How dare she ignore us? I am so turned on right now!' I wished that one day I would find Erin's off switch. Too bad I'm not that lucky.

After she opened the door she went inside and we followed her into a large room full of weapons and more army men walking around. I walked on the smooth concrete floor and looked around at all the stands of weaponry. I didn't pay mind to all the looks I was attracting, and soon Molly approached one man who wasn't dressed in camo.

The man looked to be in his late forties and had dark hair with gray streaks running through it. He wore a neat white dress shirt with gun holsters on his shoulders, as well as dark pants and boots. Once he noticed Molly he smiled at her and she spoke to him with a serious tone. "Sir, we have something important to tell you."

The man held up a cigar and shook his head a little while continuing to smile. "Molly, I told you before, call me Hank. Now, what's this important news?" Molly's face remained serious. "We have evidence of a cure." Hank's smile faded, and the others around us turned their heads. Hank waited a few seconds to respond. "What do you mean? Where is this evidence?"

Molly then gestured to me and Hank gave me a look that said he didn't notice me standing there the whole time. "This is Kane. We found him when we were out looking for supplies. He claims that he was injected with the antidote. We witnessed him getting bitten and he didn't change. Whatever he was injected with also gave him strength and mental clarity." I then heard James mumble to himself behind me. "Some clarity..." Hank raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by that?"

Molly's seriousness turned into awkwardness. "Well, he's a schizophrenic. Or, what's left of one." James jumped in eagerly. "He talks to himself but he's somehow a cocky bastard too." I turned to him with an eyebrow raised and Hank grinned. "How interesting. We'll have to have our people in the lab take a look at him to see if this is the real deal or not. I'll have some of my men see you there, Kane."

I then jumped behind Molly and wrapped my arms around her. "I'm not going anywhere without Molly." James rolled his eyes. "As you can see, he has imprinted on her." Hank gave James a confused look. "On your girlfriend?" I then retaliated to James's comment by saying, "As you can see, he doesn't do anything to stop me." James uncrossed his arms to gesture in confusion. "Dude, I've seen you punch. Can you blame me?" Molly turned to him in annoyance. "So you're just going to let him be all over me like this?" James stepped back with defensiveness. "Of course not! I'm just going to handle the situation like an adult. Acting out from jealousy never helped anybody, Molly."

Hank then laughed as he watched the drama unfold. "I already love the dynamic you three have going on. Why don't I have my men escort all of you down to the lab? I'd like to join you myself if you don't mind." Molly pushed me off of her and nodded at him. "Of course." We all then turned to walk back to the way we came in and I couldn't help but smile as I walked behind Molly. 'She's annoyed with the twink. All you got to do now is find out everything wrong with him and you'll have her legs wrapped around your head in no time!' Erin plotted, manically. I hated to admit it, but Erin's plan didn't sound that bad. I would find a way to break them up without looking like I was the one who did it if it was the last thing I ever did.

As we walked down the stairs I realized that I hadn't paid attention to where we were going and I was too busy staring at Molly the whole time. I only snapped out of it when Hank reached the bottom of the stairs next to me and got my attention. "So tell me, You've really been spending the apocalypse outside the wall, oblivious to all the danger?" I wasn't interested in chatting but I nodded anyway. "Pretty much."

Hank spoke as if we'd been friends for a long time as he took a drag from his cigar. "What made you wait such a long time before deciding to come here? Surely you knew what an asset you possibly could be to prevent human extinction." I rolled my eyes but he didn't see it. 'What's this guy's deal, being all up in your business like this?' Erin asked with annoyance. 'You can't blame him for being curious about you. I know I would be.' John added.

I sighed and tried to answer in a way that would make the conversation end faster so I could concentrate on Molly's beauty. "I don't owe the human race anything. The only reason I'm helping you is because Molly would like it if I did." Hank looked at me curiously as I walked faster and left him behind the group. 'Well done, telling the truth.' Mary said proudly. I smiled and we soon reached a door near the end of the hall.

One of the officers used their keycard to tap on the pin pad, and the steel door opened with a beep. Inside, there was a lab with tables of equipment and scientists wearing lab coats and goggles as they tested on their counters. I started to get flashbacks to the prison and I felt my anxiety growing. I kept quiet about it for Molly but John started to freak out. 'Wait, are they going to perform experiments on us again?! What if you just walked into another prison?!'

I tried not to freak out from his concerns as well and walked into the room quietly. "It's okay, if that happens I'll be strong enough to get away." Hank walked in after me and was looking at me from hearing me talk to myself. I glanced at him before stepping back to Molly's side. Hank went on to explain to the scientists that they had found a possible antidote, and their reaction was what I expected. They were thrilled but they contained their excitement for the possibility of it being a failure. One of the scientists then came up to me and gestured for me to follow them. "If you would come right this way, all we would need from you is a blood test."
