The air was perfect outside. Not too humid and just the right temperature. This was pretty rare for the area, as John lived in North Carolina, just off the east coast of the US. Granted it was still early, and there was plenty of time for it to warm up, but nevertheless, John was enjoying it while it lasted. He had 15 minutes until his class was due to start, and there was about a 10-minute walk. John and Ryan lived in a dorm together during their freshman year but they were able to get their own shared apartment this year which had its benefits but involved a little stroll to get to the campus.
John decided to pick up the pace. While he wasn't going to be late, he was almost always early. After walking for a couple of minutes, the main campus came into his view. He was heading towards the gym. Unfortunately, John's first class of the day was Physical Education. John wasn't exactly athletic, but he was required to take a "health" class, and PE was something that could fulfill this requirement. He quickly arrived and made his way to the locker room where they all meet before class. John quickly opened his locker and stored his bag and a few other things he brought, and sat amongst the other students waiting for class to start. He looked over to his left and noticed Anthony, who is a close friend of Ryan. John and Anthony weren't exactly friends, but they did talk occasionally due to the shared PE class and because they were both Ryan's friends.
John walked over and asked, "Do you know what we are doing today? I know last week it was mentioned that we would be starting strength training soon."
Anthony responded, "I have no idea, but I'd assume so. I'm actually looking forward to it though. I would rather do that than cardio."
This made John laugh, and he replied, " Well, I'd actually rather do none of it, especially because it's this early in the morning!"
After John finished saying that, the PE instructor, Mr. Reece, came into the locker room. He confirmed what John had said earlier, stating that the group would start strength training.
"Alright, let's head to the basement training room, we will be there for the entire week, so we can just meet down there for the rest of the week." Mr. Reece stated.
With that, all the students quickly proceeded to the door on their way to the lower-level weight room. John stuck next to Anthony as he was the only person he really knew in the class. Most of the class consisted of freshmen, and as a sophomore, he didn't know any of them. After descending the staircase into the basement, the class walked down a dimly lit hallway to a set of double doors with the words, "Training Room" etched above them. Mr. Reece quickly propped open the doors, and the class entered.
Afterward, Mr. Reece started to take attendance, but John had spaced out. He was scanning the room, looking at each of the various pieces of equipment. He was trying to find one that looked interesting to start with, however, his train of thought got interrupted by Anthony nudging him.
"You not going to say here?" Anthony said.
With John not paying attention, his name had been called and he hadn't even noticed. He quickly said present and apologized for not paying attention. Mr. Reece glanced at him, but then proceeded as normal. Once attendance was done, he released the students to do whatever they wanted for the remainder of the period. John ended up deciding to head to a rower machine. After the students reached their spots, they all proceeded to start working out on their chosen machines. Mr. Reece was walking around turning on the TVs located around the room.
John thought to himself, 'Well, I better get started. Don't want to attract even more attention from the teacher after I was caught not paying attention'. John then began to work out himself.
