Chapter 9: No choice

"Hi Luka! How you doing?" Luna and I greeted him while walking towards our class. It has been a week since Eliana was our friend.

We were walking in the corridor when I saw Eliana in her class with some boys around her. "You guys go on without me, I'll be back!" Luka and Luna nodded and continued their way.

Eliana was looking quite worried. I approached the class eavesdropping them. "Look at that weirdo! I'll give her a 5 out of 10!" A boy mocked and Eliana kept standing still feeling embarrassed of herself. I entered the class, grabbing Eli to my side.

"What's going on here?" I asked sternly. "Don't you see, we are talking to a friend!" A boy replied sarcastically. "I don't think so!" I furrowed my eyebrows. "We do what ever we want, do you have a problem?" Another boy stood up and waked towards me. "Yes! She is my friend! Do you have a problem?" There was a huge silence until the boy said, "Well it's none of our business! We still do whatever we want!!"

I took the pen that was on the table and grabbed the collar of the boy. I pointed the pen at his eyes. "Now I dare you to stop me!" I gave him a death glare. I loosened my fingers letting him go. "You'll pay for what you've done!" The black haired boy yelled before he and his friends left the class leaving me, Eli and some of the students that were watching us.

"Are you ok?" I asked my friend. "I'm good! Thanks for standing up for me." She gave me a shy smile. "No problem! Don't worry as long as you have your friends we will protect you!" I smiled at her. Her smile turned into a frown. "I don't have any friends! Everyone finds me weird so they get away from me!" She replied sadly. "Who told you that we were not friends, come with us! From now on you can stay with us, besides we are the same as you so we can talk about secrets and stuff!" She nodded and joined me towards my class.

We entered and saw Luna and Luka talking cheerfully. "Hey guys I'm back and I'm with someone!" I shouted and the whole class looked at me but i didn't pay much attention. I continued to walk towards my sister. "Eli!! Hi!" Luna shouted and gave her a big hug as if she had not seen her in years.

"How are you?" Luka smiled at her. "I'm good!" She replied with confidence. "I had to take care of her bullies and guess what!! I gave them a good lesson that they will never forget!" I said excitedly. Luna and Luka congratulated me proudly. "I'll be going in my class now! My teacher will be there soon! See ya!" Eli waved as she walked past the door of the class.

"Hey everyone!" Jacob entered the class just a few minutes later. "Hey! Whatsup?" Luka gave him a fist bump. "Good morning class!" Mr Robert walked inside the classroom. "Today we will be doing Trigonometry, open your book at page 125! Let me inform you that you will be having a test soon! Maybe next week?" He added with a big devilish smile while placing his books on the table.

The class was suddenly filled with worry. The nerds were quite happy about the news but not the others... "I'm going to fail this test for sure!" I whimpered at Luna. "Every year you repeat the same thing and yet you pass your exams like a pro!!" Luka interrupted our conversation with a huge smile on his face.

As soon as the bell rang I went out of the class to get something to eat. I wanted to bring Eli with me but couldn't find her. Inside the cafeteria, I saw Luna and Luka already at the table talking. Luka waved at me to come while Luna was looking quite nervous. "Hi!" I greeted the two teenagers excitedly. "...Hannah... We..." Luna muttered while playing with her fingers nervously. "What is it? Are you two hiding something from me?" I asked suspiciously.

"Luna and I are dating!" Luka finally said it instead of my sister who was all flushed by my side. "You..." I took a pause to look around before whispering to them; "You two are dating? since when? Oh wait let me guess since the day we found out about your secrets?"

"Yes!" He grinned at me. "Well then congrats!! I'll bring you two a gift tomorrow!" I congratulated Luka and gave my 'red' sister a hug. 'Well it won't last long!' Spark sighed. 'I know but for now let them enjoy their life!' I smiled back at the couple as I mind-linked Spark.

A few minutes later, Jacob came with Eli next to him and his hand was on her shoulder. "What is Jacob doing with her?" I said in an angry tone. Jacob let go of Eli's hand and walked towards me. "We need to talk!" He spoke in a serious tone.

I nodded and walk out of the cafeteria, in the hallway. "What is it you wanted to talk about?" I asked calmly. "About the mate thing... Did you gave it a thought? What's your answer?"

"No I-I'm sorry! I can't be your mate!" I lowered my head knowing that I just lied to him.

~A few minutes before (flashback)~

"I'll be back in a sec!" I waved at my sister as I walked towards the washroom. Just as I entered the washroom, someone grabbed my arm tightly. "Well look who's here!"

"Vanity! Valencia! What's your problem now?" I uttered furiously. "It's just about Jacob. Stop being his pet and get out of his life!!" Vanity tightened her grip. "You've already took your revenge in the forest leave me alone now!"

"I don't know what you're talking about? Stop being an ass and get out of our way or-" She raised her hand to slap me but I grabbed it back. "Or what?" I gave her an evil smile.

"How about this bottle of Nightshade? Maybe this will be useful for Jacob!" She removed a bottle from her pocket. My evil smirk turned into a frown. It contained a purple liquid. "H-how do you know about Nightshades!" I stammered while looking at her with a shocking expression.

"Oh I know a lot about you and your group! You filthy birds!" Vanity and Valencia grinned. I tried to fight back but failed. "If you don't do as she says, this nightshade will end up in Jacob's food!" Vanity added placing a devilish smile on her face.

"But Valencia you like Jacob, then why do you want to kill him?" I asked confoundedly. "I liked him but now he's a monster and I hate monsters! And if Jacob can't be mine it can't be yours!!" Valencia replied arrogantly.

"Now that we're all clear I hope you'll stay away from him otherwise..." Vanity showed me the bottle of Nightshade as she and Valencia got out. I washed my face, trying to clear all the thoughts in my mind. I burst into tears while Spark comforted me repeatedly. "If I had told him that I loved him none of this would have occured! I've got no choice Spark!" I sniffled.

~End of flashback~

"I'm sorry Jacob we can't be mates!" I replied with a sad expression on my face. I could feel my eyes becoming teary but I controlled them. "Are you sure? You do know what you are doing by rejecting your mate?" Jacob asked sadly. "Yes! I'm sure about it! We don't like each other anyways so it would be pretty easy for us to remain friends!" I put on a fake cheering smile on my depressed face.

"Ok then! I hope you don't regret later!" he spoke with concern. "I don't have much of a choice anyways!" I looked down as the thought of Valencia's warning kept popping in my mind but Jacob didn't seem to notice. "So... friends!" I plastered a smile on my face as I shaked Jacob's hand. I somehow realised I liked him that day but I couldn't tell him because of that witch.

'I can tell him if you want?' Spark requested to tell Jacob the truth but I refused, fearing that Valencia would do something. I turned back towards the cafeteria towards my sister but Jacob grabbed my hand. "I ever something happens to you tell me please!" I nodded and walked inside the cafeteria.

As I was walking I bumped into Valencia. She gave me a huge smirk and continued her way. "I hope it's not too late!" Vanity added as she walked past me. It took me a minute to realise what she said. 'She did not keep her promise!' Spark uttered in a fit of rage.

I rushed towards Jacob to see him at his table with Luka. He had a glass of orange juice in front of him and he was about to drink the juice. I rushed towards him and pushed him. The glass fell and was scattered everywhere. "What the-" he looked at me in confusion. Soon i realised that the orange juice fell on my hands. "Miss Courtney! In my office now!!" Mr. Martin interupted everyone in a furious tone. 'Bad timing Mr. Martin! It was an emergency!' Spark frowned at the teacher who couldn't really hear her.

I followed Mr. Martin till we reached his office. He opened the door for me to enter and I took a seat. "I've heard that you bunk school and today I see you bullying your friends?" He asked furiously. "Sir it's not what you think." I explained anxiously. "Then what is it!" He raised his voice. I couldn't tell him that there was nightshade poison in his drink because this does not even affect humans. "I thought there was poison in his drink!" I replied.

"Ok let's take it as if there was poison in his drink but what about bunking classes? Do you have an excuse?" I didn't know what to say so I remained silent. Mr. Martin took it as a 'no' and I was ordered to stay at school till sunset which was a bit upsetting. Firstly I was infected by the poison and on the other hand the effect was occurring pretty fast because last time when i got it my healing system was weaken.

Jacob's POV

Hannah looked quite worried when she threw my glass on the floor but I couldn't understand why? 'Jac! I smell nightshade on the floor!' Thunder suddenly interrupted my thoughts. 'You mean from the juice? But who did it?' I asked bewilderedly. 'Forget about who did I think when Spark tried to stopped us she got some on her hands!' Thunder muttered.

'We have to get her before she gets sick! Why is she always getting herself poisoned everytime?' I stated worriedly. I stood up abruptly and walked out of the cafeteria. Luna and Luka stayed behind, they had class after this and Eliana had a lot of work to do. I made my way towards Mr. Martin's office and waited till she came out.

I had to eavesdrop to know what was going on. "I thought there was poison in his drink!" I heard Hannah justified but Mr. Martin was so mad at what she did that he ended up punishing her. 'We have to stay with her in case something happens but if someone notices you, we'll be in trouble' Thunder suggested in a concerned tone. I agreed but the problem was that we didn't really have a plan. 'The sunset time is usually at 7 p.m here and you have to stay for 3 to 4 hours straight! Your dad's gonna be angry!' My eagle spirit told me. 'I know but we've got no other choice!' I said to him as kept standing at the teacher's door.

"Jacob! What are you doing here?" I heard a voice as the door opened.
