Chapter 8

When Kayla arrived at school the next day, she immediately started searching Lucas out with her eyes. She was so excited and couldn't wait to see him but she told herself that she was not going to show him all of the excitement that she was feeling about him when she saw him. Where did her pride go? Of course she wasn't going to let him know that she had been thinking of him all through the night and that he was the reason she could barely sleep last night and also why she was so excited about getting up from the bed this morning.

Kayla scanned the car park with her eyes immediately Mitchel dropped her off and drove away. She couldn't see Lucas's car. Maybe he wasn't in school yet. After all, she was early. He'll probably drive in any moment from now, Kayla thought as she strolled towards the school building. It wasn't like she wanted him to catch her just standing there in the car park waiting for him. She saw Charlotte coming from a distance as she was about to enter the building. She obviously was an early bird too.

"Hiiii" Charlotte said to her excitedly waving her hands. Kayla just loves her energy. She was wearing a bright yellow blouse on blue jean trousers and her head was packed in a bun. Her whole personality and dressing screamed excited and friendly and Kayla could tell already that she was someone that just enjoyed living life.

"Hello" Kayla said back to her as she got closer and was very surprised when Charlotte reached in for a hug. She really was a warm and friendly person, Kayla thought to herself again

They both walked into the school together and Kayla felt a bit awkward not knowing what to say to Charlotte. But unless Kayla wasn't noticing well, Charlotte didn't seem to mind the awkward silence. Maybe she didn't even think it was awkward at all

"What class do you have this morning?" Charlotte asked her as they walked along the passageway

"History" Kayla said

"Ohh I'm having math" Charlotte said

Charlotte pointed Kayla's class to her.

"I'll see you at lunch," Charlotte said just before she disappeared into her classroom.

She was excited already. How many people could say that they got a lunch buddy on their second day of school.

It was actually just very exciting for her. She could see that she was really going to like it here. Being the first person in the class, Kayla walked up to a seat and dropped her bag. She hoped that this was not the kind of class where students have their own prescribed seats.

Kayla sat down and rested her head on the desk. Maybe she could take a quick nap before the other students and the teacher come into the class. But no sooner had she put her head down than she started to hear footsteps. Kayla didn't raise her head up though. She did not want the students to stare eyes at her as the students do in almost all of the classes she has attended. She got it that she was a new student and it might be quite surprising for them to see a new student in their small town. She was sure that most of them knew one another right from middle school or even kindergarten. She was the new face, the alien thing in their midst and they were liable to stare.

Just then she heard his voice. Her first instinct was to flip her head up to see him but she kept her head on the desk. Maybe he would walk towards her like he did the day before. Or perhaps he wouldn't notice that she was here at all. She really should raise her head from the table.

Kayla lifted her head from the table and turned to her side to glance at Lucas. He was talking with two boys at the other end of the class. He was wearing a short sleeve white t-shirt that was tight around the biceps. Kayla tried not to stare. He turned his head and his eyes met hers. He held her stare for a moment and then turned away as if he didn't see her. Kayla was unfazed.

It was almost as if he wasn't the same person from the day before. The day before, he was all over her talking about destiny and offering her rides and whatnot and now he was pretending like he didn't know her. Maybe he didn't really see her. Maybe she was imagining the part where he had stared at her and then turned away. But she knew that she was not imagining it. It had happened all right. Kayla wondered what to do. It was surprising that she was so affected by his cold attitude towards her. After all, she had only just met him.

The teacher came in and Kayla decided to focus on her lecture. But she couldn't stop thinking about Lucas and she turned every now and then to look at him but he never did turn to look at her as well. What was happening? Kayla asked herself as she listened to the teacher teach with half of her mind.

Perhaps she could just go over after the class and say hi to him. Maybe something had happened over the night. Perhaps he had some issue at home and he was just not in the mood to be friendly. But then Kayla remembered that he had literally been talking to some guys when he came in. But then, he had not talked to her. He had dropped her at her house yesterday and wouldn't even say hi to her today. Kayla was beginning to get angry. She could not remember ever being treated like this by a guy. She told herself to not let the incidence affect her confidence in herself.

After the class was over and the teacher left, Lucas was the first person out of the class.
