Chapter - 38
Jacob had prepared thoroughly for this escort mission; he'd spent days gathering information, ensuring he had enough provisions, sharpening his skills, and refining his sword technique. Today, as the dawn light began creeping over the horizon, he and Elara set out, both ready for the unknown challenges that might lie ahead.
Arriving at Ironhelm's southern gate just as the early morning sun cast long shadows over the cobblestone streets, they were greeted by a bustling scene of merchants, travelers, and city guards gearing up for the day's journeys.
Their client, a young merchant named Lucius Haverford, stood by his caravan, attentively going over a leather-bound ledger. In his mid-twenties, Lucius exuded a polished, businesslike air; his attire—well-tailored but practical—spoke to both his wealth and readiness for the road. His dark hair was neatly combed, and his green eyes sparkled with a mixture of excitement and nervous energy.
"Good morning, Mr. Haverford," Jacob greeted as they approached, extending a hand with a warm but professional smile. "I'm Jacob Turner, and this is my partner, Elara."
Lucius looked up from his ledger, breaking into a welcoming smile as he shook Jacob's hand. "Good morning, Mr. Turner, Miss Elara—though, please, call me Lucius. It's a pleasure to meet you both. I've heard very positive things about your skills, Jacob."
Jacob and Elara exchanged a nod, each feeling encouraged by Lucius's easygoing demeanor. "Thank you, Lucius," Jacob replied. "We're here to make sure you reach your destination safely. Are we all set to head out?"
"Almost," Lucius replied, glancing over the caravan one last time. "Allow me to introduce you to my personal guards." He gestured towards two men standing nearby, each dressed in sturdy leather armor and armed with well-crafted swords. "This is Darius and Marcus. They're both faerium users as well, with skills in defensive and supportive magic."
Darius, a tall, rugged-looking man with a scar running across his cheek, gave Jacob a quick nod. "Good to meet you," he said, his voice gruff but polite. Marcus, shorter and stockier, offered a friendly smile. "Looking forward to working together," he added, clearly the more outgoing of the two.
Jacob shook their hands, noting the firmness in their grips. "Likewise. It's reassuring to know we've got skilled hands along for the journey."
Lucius nodded, visibly pleased with his assembled team. "The trail has been more dangerous than usual lately, so I thought it prudent to secure some extra protection. With all our skills combined, I think we stand a good chance of reaching our destination without incident."
With introductions complete, they made final checks around the caravan, ensuring the cargo was securely packed, the provisions were ample, and the horses were steady. Each of them adjusted their gear, double-checked their weapons, and exchanged a few last words about the plan and potential threats on the road.
Satisfied that everything was in order, Lucius took a final look at the caravan before nodding to Jacob and Elara. "Alright, let's move out."
The caravan began to roll out of the city gates, wheels creaking under the weight of the goods within. Jacob took a steadying breath, falling into step beside Elara as they walked alongside the caravan, their eyes scanning the open road before them.
