You are unceremoniously hauled into a dark doorway, your assailant's hand clamped tight over your mouth.
"Be silent," a harsh male voice hisses in your ear. "I am on your side. They are coming."
You stay still and silent, pressed tight into the unseen man in the shadow-swathed entranceway; soon you hear the regular tramping tread of two pairs of feet. One man gives an instruction in German, and they pause at the alley entrance, presumably looking in. Then, after what feels like an eternity, they move on. The man's grip slackens.
