'Pain, anger and despair, that's all I have ever been able to remember since being born into this world'' - Xander, Age 12
More than 700 years ago, Scientists decided to try and create interdimensional portals into other planets… only afterwards would this be known as the catalyst that nearly brought about the era of extinction.
After the first portal was discovered to go to a planet filled with monsters, hundreds more started appearing out of nowhere, with this every creature you could imagine started coming out of these portals, mythical creatures, giant hybrid beasts. Anything you can think of, Someone has died from it.
For years we were pushed onto the edge of extinction, trying everything including nuclear weapons. But for the B rank magic beasts and above they would hardly be scratched.
As more and more of humanity was being destroyed, a light shined through the dark abyss, William Hanover. The first human to finally develop the Talent to manipulate the elements around him.
Slowly, thousands of people started to develop these talents, from manipulating elements to controlling beasts around them, to being able to warp space itself. The government eventually started sorting these talents into ranks, from E - S and levels from 1 - 10. The rank being the potential of the talent, while the level was the extent that the talent had been trained to the limit of their rank. This obviously still left for some disparity between ranks, for example. An A rank, level 1 would annihilate, an E rank, level 10.
It was later found out that due to disturbance caused by the portals, a hidden potential in most of us was revealed. This had slowly allowed humans to sense the natural energy flowing around us and harness it. Albeit most people are able harness this energy in ways set from birth.
While Xander was engrossed into another history book, trying to learn as much as possible about his world. A sharp feminine voice entered his ears "Xander! What did I tell you would happen if I caught you in the library again!" As he turned around he felt a burning sensation spreading across his right cheek
*Slap!*
"I-i'm sorry, I thought it would have been okay because no one else was here" He quickly explained. Xander learnt from an extremely young age that apologizing instantly saved him a world of pain. Standing in front of him glaring with her vibrant crimson eyes that seemed to glow in her anger. Her exquisite platinum hair flowed as she yelled. With a body that would have been the center of attention in its prime was cassandra… his mother.
"There's no point giving you access to this place! It's not like you're going to have a future with how weak you are." She exclaimed while throwing him out and fixing her long floral dress
"Y-yes mam."
He didn't want to just kneel and accept his treatment but he knew he was too weak and fighting would only serve to get him a death sentence. He needed strength to do what he wished.
Obviously that would be easier for most people, but not Xander. With his scrawny and weak build, mixed with the fact that He was one of the few select children that had no visible talent and was unable to succeed in any form of training. He was in every meaning of the word. Ordinary. A better name for that in this era would be, worthless, a waste of life, weak.
That never stopped him from striving to gain independence away from his family, or more accurately, prove everyone who ever doubted him wrong
After getting up and seeing it was still bright out Xander decided to visit his favourite, and only friend in town, Spike. He was the only person who never judged Xander by his lack of talent and always believed that he was going to change the world itself, the only thing that hampered their friendship was Spike was the son of the most popular blacksmith in town. He was even known in the surrounding land to make some of the best quality Magic Weapons and Armor.
On his way to Spikes shop he admired the passing buildings, due to the shop's popularity it was located in the noble end of town, this caused all of the surrounding buildings to be exquisitely made out of stone and wood. With marvellous patterns of mages mid-fight with magic beasts.
All while Xander was admiring these patterns he was oblivious to the fact that he was getting glares from everyone who passed him due to his dishevelled appearance mixed with the complete lack of an aura, which all people no matter the strength of their talent obtained and subconsciously emitted.
Finally he stood outside of the store looking at the sign hanging over the door "Ambrose's Forge & Wares".
