Chapter 29: Home At Last

Ardashir’s car was gone by the time they reached the bottom of the stairs. The sun was already in the sky but had not crested the top of the buildings across the street yet.

Lavinia had expected Arashir to run as soon as she freed him from the obligation of helping her. Still, she hadn’t thought about her own car.

Her keys had been among Casey’s possessions, which they found in a cardboard box in the kitchenette. They left fairly quickly once their moment of heartfelt confession had passed. Lavinia grabbed a blanket off one of the couches to act as a shield against the sun.

“How are we going to get home?” Casey slid her hand into Lavinia’s.

‘She called it home…’ Lavinia felt her breath catch.

She shrugged. “I don’t know.” She had wiped her face but it still felt sticky from blood. She ran a finger along her cheek, feeling where the blood had run. “I can’t go out like this.”
