Chapter 34: An Understanding
The apartment is still dark when I return. It’s three o’clock. Amun won’t be awake for another hour. My stomach flips, sick with anxiety. What can I tell him? How can I make him understand why I left, how I could have put myself in that situation?
My hands shake as I set down Selena’s clothes on the countertop. Her red-bottom shoes clatter to the floor, making me jump and stumble into the coat rack near the door. I take deep breaths, trying to calm down, to wash Selena’s shocked face from my mind.
Still wearing my outerwear, I slink to the couch and cover myself with an afghan, pressing my eyes closed. That’s where Amun finds me an hour later.
Gingerly lifting the blanket, he peers into my face. I look up and see that he’s holding the bracelets I had left on the nightstand, an anxious question is stamped into his expression. I groan, sitting up and putting my head in my hands. Where can I even start?
