Chapter 41 Avengers Initiative
Leon owes Phil Coulson a favor because he gave Pepper Potts the business card while indirectly asking him to protect Pepper.
Regardless, Leon honored the favor after receiving a phone call. Could this favor be repaid?
Initially, Leon disliked being indebted to others, so he accompanied Phil Coulson to meet Fury once again.
Originally, the business card was given to protect Pepper Potts, so it should have been found by Tony.
However, the relationship between Tony and Pepper Potts had not yet been confirmed. On the other hand, Tony had given numerous things, including half of his own company's shares. Actually, Tony's shares were only 40%, excluding Leon. The acquired shares originally belonged to Obadiah, and the remaining 20% were held by other shareholders.
After contemplating, Leon realized he should do something for Tony as well.
The safe house remained the same as before, but this time it was only occupied by Phil Coulson, and Fury alone awaited their arrival.
"Oh? It's still intact here?" Leon surveyed the house and noticed that, apart from the equipment originally used in the safe house, everything remained intact.
As an emergency safe house, it would have been stocked with various emergency equipment, including weapons.
However, since its last use, the supplies were no longer available.
The reason why it was called a safe house was because its secrecy was unknown even to its own personnel, with only a few top commanders being privy to its location.
Especially among agents, sometimes even their own colleagues became adversaries.
Thus, the role of the safe house became even more crucial.
"Is there something you are looking for me?" Leon, without hesitation, found a chair and seated himself, gazing at Fury. "Haven't you understood my stance from last time? I won't join S.H.I.E.L.D."
Fury nodded, indicating that he remembered Leon's response, but couldn't help asking, "Why? You seem to strongly oppose our organization, S.H.I.E.L.D."
Leon smiled and retorted, "Absurd. You aren't even aware that HYDRA has infiltrated your ranks. I don't enjoy being teammates with imbeciles."
Even Leon was aware that the current top commander of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the very individual HYDRA had penetrated into the organization.
Despite Nick Fury being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization ultimately served the United Nations, placing someone above Fury's directorial position.
And that person was the HYDRA operative.
One can imagine the current state of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Leon thought to himself that if they couldn't even handle their internal affairs, he had no interest in involving himself in unwanted troubled.
The main point is this.
"Another thing, you claim to work for the world peace, but in reality, you've been serving a particular country. So, didn't it became useless. I won't align with any factions, but let's just say even your own country doesn't hold you in high regard. I won't delve into the reasons, as you're well aware," Leon expressed his intent rudely this time.
Being polite the last time was merely an act of goodwill, not wanting to stir up trouble.
He didn't want to engage in war with a any country easily, not because he couldn't, but because he had the capability to effortlessly dismantle a any nation, which would only result in other countries turning against him in fear of annihilation.
Would he then retreat? Or would he destroy the entire world in one swift move?
Leon had mentioned before that he didn't come to conquer Earth; he didn't harbor such grand ambitions.
All he desired now was to live peacefully on Earth, nothing more.
However, if Fury believed he would compromise due to that or be frightened, he was mistaken.
Fury gazed at Leon intently.
Fury understood that Leon was well-informed and not an ignorant fool.
It seemed that there was no way to deceive him anymore.
Fury sighed, "Alright, I won't push you any further then. But there's one thing I want to clarify. S.H.I.E.L.D is indeed a United Nations agency. Yes, we don't simply work for all country. You need to understand that we are not fighting against the enemies of the United Nations, including individuals from a other country who engage in activities in other countries. It has nothing to do with us."
S.H.I.E.L.D's adversaries mainly consist of HYDRA and other "terrorist" organizations.
S.H.I.E.L.D doesn't assist one country in infiltrating others.
The reason it may seem like we're favoring a country is because both S.H.I.E.L.D's headquarters and the United Nations are located in that country. It might have led to a misunderstanding," Fury speculated, thinking that might be the reason behind Leon's misconception.
But was it really just a misunderstanding?
Leon couldn't be bothered to argue and asked, "So? Can I leave now?"
"Don't worry, I know it wasn't easy for you to come here, and this is for you," Fury, being the head of the agency, understood the situation well, including the fact that Leon didn't like him.
So he stopped the pointless conversation, took out a document, and handed it to Leon.
Leon raised an eyebrow, suspiciously glanced at Fury, and then took the document.
After just a quick look, Leon immediately tossed the document aside, stood up, and left.
What the hell, Avengers? The question is, why did they come looking for him?
It turned out that the document was the Avengers' plan. Fury intended to assemble a team of individuals with superhuman or special abilities to form a special task force.
This team was only loosely affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D, but not entirely the same entity.
In other words, the Avengers wouldn't have to obey S.H.I.E.L.D's commands and wouldn't receive wages from them.
The team would only be activated to handle specific events when needed.
For instance, in the face of a massive invasion by the Chitauri army, or Ultron's robot army, or even Thanos' forces, and so on.
But Leon had no interest whatsoever, so he discarded the document, turned his head, and left.
"Wait a minute, aren't you interested?" Fury called out from behind.
Leon snorted coldly without looking back, "What the hell, according to your document, the first person to be dealt with after the Avengers are formed is me."
As he walked towards the door, Leon turned his head and flipped Fury off.
The Avengers' responsibility was to deal with emergencies and serious situations, and as an alien, wasn't Leon exactly what they needed to face?
If he joined the team, not only would he not be paid, but he would also be helping others beat himself up?
Stop joking around, go play by yourselves.
And so, Leon left. He didn't join the Avengers and chose to decline.
Fury shook his head in disappointment.
Phil Coulson leaned forward and asked, "Should I try to persuade him again?"
Fury replied, "If he has made up his mind, I don't think it's worth trying again. Why not let Natasha Romanoff give it a shot?"
Fury had a pensive expression, perhaps contemplating something sinister.
