She stopped.
She looked around the room to be sure this wasn’t yet another cruel joke. Seeing nothing, Rowan went back to the garment bag. She saw pink. Bright pink. Like one of those dresses at the front. That made no sense. That made absolutely no sense unless…her mother already knew. Then April already knew. And suddenly, Rowan’s entire family knew, and the secret that she’d just wanted to keep to herself, for herself, a while longer before it was snatched away again was gone.
Rowan closed the bag. She did up her buttons with shaking fingers. She surveyed the area once again, trying to keep her panic under control. The only way out of the store was to go through the glass doors at the front. To go past April again. Rowan steadied herself for another minute before she pushed through.
“What did you think?” April asked. “Did you want to—?”
