Speed Kills

As soon as the battle started Tom yelled his command "Robin use peck." I told Eevee to dodge but she couldn't as spearow proved to by much faster and easily followed each time she jumped away. The difference in level was easily apparent as spearow landed peck after peck on Eevee who was now showing signs of damage. I thought that Eevee's speed boost could help level the playing field but I doubt she would last long enough for it to even take affect looking at the way this battle was progressing. Spearow also seems confident at this at it started squawking and preening itself mid battle. I needed to do something quick or Eevee would be knocked out. The next time spearow launched herself at l I had her counter by useing sand attack using that opportunity to creat some distance between them. Normally this would be an extremely dumb move becuase spearow typically had keen eye as an ability, but I knew this one didn't.

Eevee who now had some breathing room looked haggard but determined to win. "Eevee keep using sand attack to kick up dust and hide in it." Following my command soon the arena was covered in a cloud of sand and dust. Tom seemed shocked by my move as did his spearow so taking advantage of the situation I yelled "Eevee now use tackle." Eevee burst out from the side of sprearow moving much faster than before but only I seemed to notice that. To land a tackle before quickly diving back into the dust cloud. I was smiling knowing that after another 5 minutes Eevee would have the advantage. Spearow squawked angrily at the situation. Not enjoying being on the receiving end if the continual attacks from my and Eevee's hit and run strategy . Then Tom realizing he was now the one in a pinch quickly ordered " Robin fly up and use your wings to blow the dust away. While I ordered Eevee to keep making the dust cloud. It soon became apparent that both spearow and Eevee lacked a long range move as this stalemate continued for quite a few minutes. Tom and the other student getting progressively more fed up with my stall tactics.

Normally I'd agree that this kind of tactic is useless as it doesn't change the flow of battle in anyone's favor. That is unless you have a pokemon who can benefit from long battles. Finally after all the stalling Eevee finally got enshrouded in another bright green aura. Only this time there wasn't a huge dust cloud to hide it. Only a few of those watching realized what had just happened as speed boost was already not a very common ability. As only 5 species of Pokemon had access to this ability normally non of which native to Kanto. Tom however was one of the people who was aware of the ability he also knew if he didn't end this quickly he would soon be at a great disadvantage. "Quick dive down at maximum speed and use peck." He ordered. "Eevee dodge and counter with a tackle when they get close." This time Eevee was easily able to dodge her increased speed making it to easy. "Continue to run circles around them while using tackle" I commanded. Now it was spearows turn to be overwhelmed by speed and soon they were knocked out.

"Spearow is unable to battle Eevee wins now send out your next Pokemon." Mrs Scott announced. The whole battle took a little more than 10 minutes and I could tell Eevee was tired and beat up but I could also see excitement in her eyes. Tom sent out his next Pokemon " Get'em Tyson let's win this." As he sent out a machop that was more impressive than his spearow.

I knew looking at it's ability what his plan most likely was to counter attack Eevee by tanking a hit. There wasn't much I could do to prevent it so my best bet was to hit it as hard I I could as I only think we could get 1 tackle off. "Tail whip while keeping your distance." I ordered. After a few minutes evading while tail whipping Eevee got another speed boost and machop had its defenses lowered to the minimum. "Alright Eevee now show them your strength tackle." I yelled "Tyson prepare yourself and immediately counter with a revenge. I believe in you." The 2 slammed into each other in the middle of the arena as Eevee lunged her whole body into the machop at maximum speed while machop stood to receive the blow while only countering with a fist no sense of protecting itself. After the impact machop stumbled back clearly affected by the blow but still standing while Eevee lay on the ground in moving out cold. Machop let out a triumphant cry before falling to the ground also knocked out. "Double knock out Lucas wins" Mrs Scott yelled with enough vigor to make any sports announcer jeolous.

She then took out a potion and quickly applied it to all the Pokemon who fought and gave each one an Oran berry. " this will do for now but after this discussion I want both of you to take your Pokemon to the medical center. it's right outside here to the left. I also want to say that was a very impressive battle for two first years and you have nothing to hang your head about Thomas. Just always strive to improve I'm sure you know what you need to work on" We both nodded at her words. " now class let's start with Thomas here. What was the reason he lost and how could he correct it moving forward." Unsurprisingly Alex spoke up. "He lost becuase he allowed his opponent's Pokemon to set up and do to his naivety in teach a long range move to his Spearow. As far as corrections he would need to teach his Pokemon how to deal with speed types that avoid close quarter combat. As well as be more decisive in the future and not passive. If he was willing to trade hits before Eevee got too fast than the Eevee would have fainted well before the spearow." He finished with a smug expression.

"Though that is correct let's not forget that he only became disadvantaged due to his opponent Lucas having a pokemon with a unique ability, and not just any ability one that is one of the rarest and strongest abilities when it comes to battling. I reckon that Lucas here would have beat everyone here yourself included simply due to nobody would have realized until it was too late. Now on to Lucas there honestly isn't much to criticize other than letting himself be overwhelmed in the beginning and hedging his strategy on sand attack against a Pokemon whose common ability in keen eye. I don't know if it was a calculated risk or just dumb luck but either way he quickly formulated and executed a plan that gave him an overwhelming advantage. I would also like to say that now that strategy won't work as well due to showing it once. I doubt anyone here would let him repeat it after seeing what happened today. But that's enough talking I want you all to pair up and start taking turns battling in the arena try to group up in terms of similar strength so that you each can get the most of this experience. I'll be walking around watching and giving advice as needed. Those who aren't battling should watch and learn from others mistakes and successes." After she finished me and Tom both started walking towards the exit to go heal our injured Pokemon.

On the way out both Vinny and Sara came up to congratulate me in Sara's case and give me a hard time in Vinny's. "God damn I'm seriously wondering whether or not you have a Horshoe up you ass. Or if your just gods chosen one since there ain't no way anybody can be this lucky. Let me guess your Mankey also has a unique ability that makes it a top tier Pokemon." He said slapping me on the back while laughing. I just smiled meakly not having the courage to break the news. "Thanks but I have to go take care of Eevee you both try to get along while I'm gone and have fun I wish you both luck in the upcoming battles." As I begin my exit again I can't help but notice a blue haired girl comforting Tom. When she notices me she shoots me a nasty glare before returning her focus back to him as he scolds her. "Come on Angela don't be mad at him he won fair and square. He also showed me my own shortcomings so I can only improve from here. Plus I look forward to battling with him in the future." " I just didn't like how he battled it seemed very cowardly just running and hiding. Plus he got lucky that your Spearow doesn't have keen eye or he would of lost instantly." She responded. Before Tom could respond I tried to pacify the situation.

"It's alright Tom she isn't wrong I had to risk everything on a 50/50 that I luckily guessed right on. Besides I can see she's your friend and it's a friends job to have each others back. I hope that we can also one day be friends as I thoroughly enjoyed our battle." "Well at least your humble and aren't letting the fluke go to your head. I'm Angela, and Tommy and I have been friends since we could crawl. Our families have been friends for generations with our mothers acting like sisters." "Nice to meet you Angela but I'm afraid I have to go to the medical office so if you'll excuse me." I said politely excusing myself. "Same here might as well let's go together.
