“Because something like that should be my decision. Just because you’d choose something of your own free will doesn’t mean you want it forced on you. Maybe I would be happy with you, but that doesn’t mean I want to be given to you by a goddess.”
“It isn’t like that,” he says. “I don’t own you, except, perhaps, in the sense that we could be said to own each other.”
“That’s still a problem. I don’t want to be owned by anyone, even if I own them back.”
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“I will respect that choice.”
“But will your goddess?” I sigh. “You’re right. I do feel a pull toward you. Is the force behind that pull going to respect my wishes or is it going to match me up with you whether I like it or not? It sounds like, when people have resisted her pull in the past, she’s just kept pulling until they gave in, regardless of what they wanted.”
“You will like it.”
