Chapter Thirteen

I don't know how my dad knew a lot about the secrets of the government and the secret base outside the city. I'm curious about a lot of things right now.

'Where does the stream ends?' I said, suddenly breaking the silence.

'It never ends, it connects with the other cities and it forms a big circle' dad replied.

'How do you know all this?'

'Sooner or later you'll find out. But not from me'

There were huge rocks ahead of us. Much bigger than those that we had passed. There seemed to be a gap in between some of the rocks. The biggest rock look so gigantic even from one side. I wonder how many metres is the area of it. Dad headed to the middle gap. And we went in. A small dark cave is inside. I was very confused. Is this the safehouse dad was referring to? Or are we gonna rest here for a while? This is certainly not a warm place. We're not gonna face comfortability for the next few hours I guess. Dad took a deep breath and went to the walls of the cave and traced his hand across the rocks. He was feeling for something. I wasn't sure what. My mom and I watched him attentively. Zayne was extremely tired to watch. He had fallen asleep long before we reached the cave. Mom had just placed him gently on the surface. She had made sure the place where she laid Zayne down is smooth.

'Aha! Here it is!' dad suddenly exclaimed. He shocked Zayne as he suddenly sat up and rubbed his eyes. Mom tended him. Dad pushed a button in the wall and the cave started to vibrate. And beside the button, a hole appeared as the wall gave way to reveal a passage down a narrow staircase. One light hanging above the stairs dimly lit the passage. The stairs was long and we can't see what's at the end of it from up here.

'Let's go' dad said excitedly.

'Are you sure?' mom asked.

'Don't you trust me Kathleen?'

I saw my dad looked at mom reassuringly. She gave him a determined look and they both were ready to head down. But I wasn't. I had enough of surprises and scares for one day.

'What's down there?' I asked.

'Help' dad replied simply.

'No seriously. I want to know first'

Dad looked at me, breathing in slowly. I could tell that I was distressing him. I know I'm a pain in the butt. I've been causing much trouble for my family and my friends' family. This all wouldn't happen if I had done nothing wrong. I am to be blamed. My family's just too polite to say it. Am I right?

'This is one of the rebellion base Zac. I'm part of the rebellion. But I helped them out as an agent living in the city. Now, I'm passed that. Like I said before, you'll learn more sooner or later. Now let's get some rest first' dad explained, hoping that I would be satisfied. But I wasn't. His explanation just increased my curiosity. But I don't want to bother him further now. I listened. He immediately turned to face the stairs afterwards. And we all started walking down the long staircase. One step at a time. There was a sudden vibration. It was the wall covering back the entrance. Can we go back out if we need to?
