Ch.2 Work

Riding my motorcycle in the rain…not a great start. Luckily I had a rain jacket in the small compartment because my brother put it there. Arriving at the station, I tuck away the wet jacket and pull off my helmet. I head inside and mentally prepare to smile through 70% of these greetings. The second I walk in I’m ambushed. Women holding folders and men with their arms crossed. Coffees in a few hands and donuts in others. Stereotypical. Loads of questions invade my ears and I feel the need to shout at everyone to shut up. But somebody beat me to it. “Everyone, quiet down!” I look up to see a buff and mean looking man, just a few feet away. I figured he was the chief, that was until I heard an almost fragile voice stutter. “Thanks Eugene, now-now everyone please settle.” Behind the buff man, now known as Eugene, stood a very delicate looking old man. He was small but not necessarily skinny. He had circular glasses that covered most of his face and his cheeks were glowing red. He wore almost the same as me but he had suspenders. I almost laughed, but I refrained. How does someone like that get chief position. “As you all, clearly, know the Detective Cayden Conri has joined our force. He has moved all the way from New York for personal reasons. Give a warm, but not suffocating, welcome. Smiles and gestures were tossed around, a few handshakes, a couple head nods, the usual. I made my way deeper into the room, the atmosphere changed back to busy. I headed for the chiefs room but spotted him in the break room. Making his own coffee. He doesn’t seem selfish or entitled, just kind and, dare I say a grandpa? I’m guessing Eugene to be his assistant, body guard, or advisor. I approached the room slowly and waited for him to notice my footsteps. “Oh, hello there Detective Conri. Would like to be shown to your office?” I nodded, “Yes sir, and please, call me Cayden.” “Alrighty Detective Cayden.” I chuckled and waited for him to stir in the remaining sugar. He began to show me around the department, and finally to my own little cubicle. It was small but it’s easier not to lose things that way. “I hope you don’t mind the cramped space. Although I can’t imagine you spending to much time in here. I’ll have Eugene sort out some of the newer cases. Mainly mugging, but there is a rape case.” My blood began to boil and I turned to him. “If you don’t mind I’ll take that case.” He obviously noticed how determined I was and he nodded with an amused look. That’s strange. I think I’ve underestimated our chief, that one look gave me chills. I can’t even explain it. It’s like he’s analyzing everything I do and he’s studying me. As a detective, It’s kinda what I do, but him…he’s different. I should’ve known honestly. “He’ll get it to you as soon as he can.” I nodded and sat down, opening my computer. I made sure they cleared my desk top before sending the data over, I don’t have time to organize anything. I also had some past cases that had run cold updated to my files. I’ll have to read those later. I sorted through what I could until loud stomps approaching caught my attention. Eugene’s large mass entered my vision and he held out a folder to me. A sandpaper folder that looked minuscule in his hands. I took it with a thanks and he nodded, walking away. Time to get to work.
