My phone chimed somewhere in the other room signaling that I had a new voicemail. I didn’t remember hearing it ring. It hadn’t been a number I had saved because that was a setting I abused on my phone.
My philosophy always being, that if it were important, they would leave a message. The method I had made a habit due to worry I would end up on the line with the man across from me. It seemed a little silly considering that if it had rang, I would have been able to use that as an excuse to take a step out of the room.
I needed that air. It was as if he was blowing hot air from his mouth to my bloodstream. Everything he said rubbed me the wrong way. Sometimes it was just the way he said something. Sometimes it was the reminder playing in the back of my mind like a siren, that he was there to take something that wasn’t his to take.
