CHAPTER THIRTY
Naya and Jason chatted heartily like old friends rather than new lovers. Both of the newly found lovers were comfortable in their own skins but looked out of place standing by the well in the early hour of this beautiful cold morning.
Even though Jason was done drawing water from the well, they made no attempt to leave. Most of the children were already up before the wake up bell rang around 7:30 am. Echoes of the little ones voice carried far even to the well where Jason and Naya stood. No one could blame them, no one liked waking up so early after a rainy night on Saturday but Naya's plea to Madam Veronica to relax the waking up time on weekend went on deaf ears.
According to Veronica, the orphanage can only be run efficiently through order and routine. Even though Naya disagreed on her methods, she kept her objections to herself.
'Do you care to talk about what happened yesterday after you stormed out to make a call…after I kissed you but then came back two hours later to have mind blowing sex with me?'
Naya had noticed Jason mood swing yesterday, she only decided to ask him now when he was calm and approachable. If not for anything, experience had taught her to stay away from angry men twice her size.
'I thought the whole concept of not dating was that we don't have to talk about our feelings'
Jason liked his private thoughts to be private and how on earth was he going to explain to the lady he just made love to….no, had sex with that he came so close to imploring and begging a twenty year old girl… a mere child and employee to come to Malawi because he might have feelings for her? Or the fact that his ego might have taken a hit because the supposed child was having intimate relations…Jason preferred saying intimate relation because he couldn't bear to say McKenna made love to another man, a few months after she confessed her undying love for him.
He was Jason fucking Ekoh-Yagazie, he doesn't grovel or pine for women; it was supposed to be the other way around.
So Jason decided to give Naya the short version of what happened.
'I called to check in on someone but turns out there was no need for me to'
Whether Naya believed his cock and bull story, she didn't pry any further.
'What is your story, Naya?' Jason asked in an attempt to steer the conversation away from him
'What makes you think that there is a story, Jason?'
'I want to know why a white American girl left her developed country to Africa to take care of orphans in the middle of nowhere and don't say it is because you want to help poor African orphans' Jason questioned
'I could say the same for you. Why did a Nigerian prince leave his throne to come to Malawi to run an orphanage that the last time I checked had millions of kwacha and doesn't need funds?' Naya asked half jokingly.
Jason smiled; how he wished he could tell her that the Orphanage was almost bankrupt because his devil of a father embezzled the whole funds meant for the Orphanage and his mother wants to cover up the crime instead of handing his father over to the police.
'I am hardly a Nigerian prince and in my case it is actually plain simple, my mother forced me to come. This experience is supposed to humble and teach me character' the simplest lie was always the best lie. His father taught him that.
'Well, if you must know… my mother died when I was ten and my father married my evil step mother. Soon my evil step mother and two new evil step sister came to live at our house and then dad died. My step mother was mean and made me do the entire chore in the house and her daughters did no chore at all. One day, I met this benevolent woman that gave me nice clothes and this beautiful shoe. Long story cut short, I met a wealthy prince who rescued me and took me away from the claws of my evil step family' Tears dripped down Naya's eyes and she quickly wiped it.
'Please don't cry…crying girls makes me nervous….please, just wipe your tears. You don't ever have to go back to your evil step family'
Jason was really concern and uncomfortable. He searched his pocket for a handkerchief but he didn't have any, he was going crazy until he saw Naya grin. She was trying not to laugh.
'Oh my God, not every girl is Cinderella' Naya shouted before she allowed herself to laugh.
'So, the story about your evil step family is a lie?' Jason asked
'You really fell for that….Jason that is the back-story of Cinderella. You do know who Cinderella is, right?'
'Who the hell is Cinderella?' Jason wasn't amused; he really thought he made her cry.
Naya started walking back to the main building to attend to the orphans but Jason could still hear her laughter. Before she walked any further, she turned and yelled.
'Buddy, you should have seen your face…damn, I am a really good actress'
Jason still had a puzzled expression. He was finding it hard to understand what just happened and why he didn't understand Naya's joke. He gave up after ransacking his mind for a minute for answers.
He followed the path Naya took and yelled.
'Who the hell is Cinderella?'
