Amelia sat in her office, the weight of the last few days pressing on her. The secrets, the lies, the betrayals it was all starting to blur together. She had made a deal with Victoria, something she never thought she'd do. But at this point, it seemed like the only way to get the answers she needed. She thought about Lucas and how much he had changed over the past few weeks. He had always been protective of her, but now it felt like there was a wall between them, one that he wasn't letting her break through.
Her phone buzzed on the desk, and for a moment, she hesitated. She already knew who it was. Lucas had been calling nonstop for the past few hours. She picked up the phone, trying to steady her nerves.
"Amelia," Lucas's voice was filled with emotion, but there was something else something that sounded like fear. "We need to talk."
She closed her eyes, feeling the tension rise in her chest. "I don't think we have anything left to say, Lucas."
"Please," he pleaded. "Just give me a chance to explain."
Amelia sighed. She had heard enough excuses, enough justifications. But something in his voice made her pause. There was no anger, no deflection, only vulnerability.
"Where are you?" she asked quietly, unable to resist the pull of his voice.
"I'll be there in twenty minutes," he replied, his tone urgent.
Amelia hung up, her mind racing. What could Lucas possibly have to say that would change everything? Had he finally decided to come clean about the things he had been hiding from her?
Twenty minutes later, Amelia heard a knock at her office door. She stood up, her pulse quickening as she turned to face him. Lucas walked in, his usual confidence gone. His shoulders were tense, his eyes avoiding hers.
"Lucas," Amelia said, her voice firm but soft. "What's going on?"
Lucas looked up at her, his eyes filled with guilt. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out at first. Amelia could see that he was struggling, torn between saying too much and not saying enough.
"I've been lying to you, Amelia," he finally confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "Not just about the business, but about everything. About me. About us."
Amelia froze. She wasn't sure if she was ready to hear whatever he was about to say, but the part of her that wanted answers couldn't stay silent. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice steady but trembling inside.
"I never told you the full truth," Lucas continued. He walked over to the window and looked out, as if the words he needed to say were too heavy to say while facing her. "I've been protecting you from things I should have shared with you from the start."
Amelia's heart sank. She had known for a while that Lucas was hiding something, but this felt different. This was deeper than she had imagined.
"You've been protecting me?" Amelia repeated, trying to make sense of his words. "From what?"
Lucas took a deep breath. "From the truth about my family. The truth about my past."
Amelia's mind spun. The more Lucas said, the more questions piled up. "Your family? What does your family have to do with any of this?"
Lucas turned to face her now, his eyes filled with regret. "You know about my father's business, right?" he asked.
Amelia nodded slowly. "Yes. But I don't see what that has to do with anything. I know you've had your problems with your family, but—"
"You don't understand," Lucas cut her off, his voice growing more urgent. "My father isn't just a businessman. He's a part of something bigger. Something dangerous. I never wanted you to be involved in any of it."
Amelia's pulse quickened. "What are you talking about?" She took a step closer to him. "What are you hiding, Lucas?"
Lucas ran a hand through his hair, his expression tortured. "I've been trying to protect you, but in doing that, I've been keeping you in the dark. I didn't want you to know that I'm part of a network that deals with things that no one should ever be involved in. My family is mixed up in illegal business, and I've been involved in it too."
Amelia's breath caught in her throat. She had never imagined anything like this. The man she had trusted with her heart was tied to something so dark. But as much as she wanted to walk away, something in her heart told her to listen.
"Why didn't you tell me?" she whispered, feeling betrayed, but also heartbroken by the pain in his eyes. "Why keep me in the dark all this time?"
"I thought I could protect you," Lucas said softly. "I thought if I kept you away from my family's business, you'd be safe. But the more I kept you out, the more it hurt us. And now, I'm afraid I've dragged you into something I can't get you out of."
Amelia stepped back, her mind reeling. "You've dragged me into something? Lucas, what are you talking about? What have you gotten me involved in?"
"There's more," Lucas said, his voice trembling with emotion. "There's a man—someone I've been working with for a long time. His name is Victor. He's been pulling the strings behind everything that's happened to us. He's the one who's been manipulating the situation."
Amelia stared at him, her mind struggling to absorb what he was saying. "Victor? Who is he? And how does he have anything to do with us?"
Lucas shook his head, his frustration evident. "I never wanted you to know. I thought I could handle it, but I was wrong. Now, he knows about you. He knows about us. And he's going to use that against us."
Amelia's heart raced. "What do you mean? What does he want?"
Lucas's voice dropped to a whisper. "He wants control. He wants everything. And now, he's making his move. He's been watching us—watching you. He'll stop at nothing to destroy everything we've built."
Amelia's thoughts were jumbled. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" She was struggling to find her bearings. "Why keep this from me, Lucas? If I'd known, I could have helped you!"
"I didn't want to drag you into this world," Lucas said, his eyes filled with sorrow. "But I've made a mess of everything. I've put you in danger, and now I'm asking you to trust me when I tell you that I'll do anything to keep you safe."
Amelia stood there, overwhelmed by the gravity of his confession. The man she thought she knew had been hiding such a dark secret. She had always suspected there was more to his story, but never in her wildest dreams did she think it would be something like this.
But just as she was about to speak, the door to her office slammed open, interrupting them both. Amelia spun around, her heart pounding in her chest.
Standing in the doorway was none other than Victor himself.
"Amelia, Lucas," he said, his voice smooth and cold. "It's time for you to make your choice. You can keep running from the truth, or you can join me."
Amelia's stomach dropped. The man who had been pulling the strings behind everything was right in front of them now. And the choices they made in the next few moments would change everything.
And then, as the tension hung in the air, Victor added with a chilling smile, "You're both already in too deep."
Amelia's heart raced as she realized that nothing would ever be the same again.
The door slammed shut behind him. Amelia and Lucas were left standing there, trapped in a game they didn't fully understand. What was Victor's next move? And could they really survive the storm he was about to unleash?
