Chapter 20

They got breakfast from a fast-food place at the edge of the city, eating it as they drove.

An hour or so later, Rick asked, “Are we going to be us, wherever we end up?”

“I won’t be using my real name,” Beau replied. “I don’t think it matters if you do. No one who would care knows you, or that you’re with me.”

Beau shook his head. “No family to keep in touch with, any more. Mom died four years ago.”

“And your dad?”

“He’s not in the picture. He met a girl, half his age, when I was eleven. Decided she was more fun than my mom, who was older than him, and took off with her. He didn’t even bother to get a divorce—just left. So Mom raised me on her own.”

“You said she was an English teacher.”
