"What about this one?"
"Err… Benelli M… 4? Also known as the M1014."
"Correct. You're pretty good at this, huh?"
"Ha, I learned it all from video games and movies. I'm not sure about recent years, but Call of Honor used to buy licenses from gun manufacturers so they could use the real names and looks of the guns. I picked up quite a few things from there."
"And they say video games are a waste of time. Not that gun knowledge is a very applicable skill in everyday life."
"Probably not. Annoys me when they don't count shots in movies though."
"Same."
After Alex had finished triple checking the logistics of the deal and determined that everything was good to go, he had decided to alleviate his boredom by quizzing Riley on the guns that were being sold to the Estraneo. Riley, also bored and eager to show off his knowledge to Alex for once, had readily accepted. As they were slowly making their way through the massive list of guns, they heard a shout from the entrance of the warehouse.
"Boss! They're here!"
"Okay, I'm coming."
Alex turned to Riley.
"This is it. Once we close this deal, I can begin changing the People's Brotherhood for the better. Are you ready?"
Riley nodded and replied, "Let's do this."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Riley watched as both trucks reached a distance of 50 meters from the warehouse before performing three point turns, which resulted in the trucks facing the warehouse with their back ends. Before the trucks had even finished parking, the people inside had already rolled up the doors and hopped out.
The first thing that Riley noticed was their outfits. Unlike the fairly plain outfits of the People Brotherhood's lower ranked troops, the Estraneo were all half naked men wearing ripped jeans while sporting gaudy hairstyles and tattoos. They were also very muscular, with huge arm muscles and six pack abs. The second thing that stood out to Riley was their low numbers. While the People's Brotherhood had over 40 people stationed in and around the warehouse, the Estraneo only had a total of six.
"Who is your Boss?"
The Estraneo man who asked the question was the tallest and most muscular of all the Estraneo thugs. He was also the only one wearing a leather jacket over his naked torso. Alex stepped forward and extended his hand for a handshake while introducing himself.
"That would be me, Mr. X."
The Estraneo spokesperson ignored the offer for a handshake and instead chose to introduce himself.
"I am Buffalo, a Capo of the Estraneo Family. I am here on behalf of my Boss."
One of Alex's men, clearly annoyed, spoke up.
"What? Our Boss is here in person, and you guys send only a Capo? The nerv-"
"Silence", Alex calmly said.
At his Boss's command, the thug shut his mouth immediately.
"Please, pay no heed to my underling. He has little understanding of the intricacies of diplomacy."
Buffalo smirked.
"It's expected, considering your perk. Your bottom ranks are all low-tier trash, right?"
"Yes, our specialty is fast recruitment and expansion, which usually means that quality suffers. But remember, we are also a member of the Council, and we demand the respect that comes with it."
By this point the rest of the Estraneo were sniggering to themselves.
"Fine fine, let's just get on with it. We need to inspect the goods first."
"Right this way."
Buffalo looked at the rest of his team before snickering and gesturing at Alex with his thumb.
"Pfft, the nerve of this guy. You think this is our first gig or somethin'? Hell naw. We ain't going in that dingy-ass place of yours. You load em up and we'll check em as you do."
The Underboss from the People's Brotherhood stepped forward and replied, "Absolutely not. What's to stop you guys from just leaving with the goods?"
Alex placed his hand on the Underboss' shoulder and interjected.
"Fine by me. Just pass me the keys to your trucks."
Buffalo smiled and threw the keys at Alex.
"So, shall we start?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"And that's the last of the goods. Do you have any issues?"
"Nope. Alright guys, shut the doors so we can get the hell outta here."
"Not before our payment."
"What? Oh yeah, that. Give it to em."
At his prompting, two of the Estraneo thugs walked forward, dragging behind them two suitcases each. At the same time the PB Underboss, on behalf of Alex, moved to verify the amount. As this was going on, Buffalo turned back to Alex.
"So what's with the kid? He your son or something? I didn't know it was 'bring your child to work' day."
Alex glanced at Riley, who had positioned himself a fair distance away to avoid getting in the way of the deal, and frowned slightly.
"That's none of your business. We're here to deal; nothing more, nothing less."
"Alright man, just a question. No need to get your panties in a twist."
"Boss! They only got half the cash."
Alex looked over at his Underboss and raised an eyebrow.
"Are you sure?"
"Very. I counted thrice."
Alex changed his gaze over to Buffalo, but this time he was glaring.
"Explain yourself. Now."
"Huh? That's weird. I could've sworn we brought all the money. Must've left it at home."
"What the fuck are you playing at? You have five minutes to produce the cash before I cancel this deal. Do you have it or not?"
Riley could tell that Alex was losing his patience, and that despite his earlier insistence that the People's Brotherhood needed this deal, he knew that his threat was very real.
"Fine fine. I'll stop fucking around."
Buffalo gripped the left collar of his jacket, pulled it up to his mouth, and said "Do it."
*BOOM*
The warehouse wall that was behind Alex and his squad exploded, causing some of the low-rank thugs to fall on their feet. The explosion threw the People's Brotherhood into disarray, as the shockwave from the explosion launched debris and pieces of concrete all over the place.
The warehouse was in ruins — somehow, there were just enough explosives laid all over the warehouse to not only escape the sight of the People Brotherhood, but to also take out the whole warehouse.
Alex, who had ducked down to avoid the shockwave, caught his fedora just as it was blown off his head. He then turned around; just in time to watch the warehouse go up in flames.
"Those mother fuckers. Is everyone okay?"
Alex drew his gun and stood up to survey his surroundings. He saw Riley, who had been blown off his feet and was now trying to get back up, and ran over to help him.
"Yo kiddo, you alright?"
"Y-yeah… what the hell happened?"
"I'm afraid we've been betrayed. Guess we gotta take em all out. Everyone, get your acts together. Let's do this!"
After Alex yelled his orders, Riley heard a few groans, especially from the thugs who were on the floor. Unsatisfied by the weak response, Alex tried again.
"Come on guys! These motherfuckers just killed every one of our family who was in the warehouse, and are trying to rob us blind! Have you guys lost your balls?! Get your asses off the ground and let's show these guys what my personal squad is capable of!
This time, Alex's battlecry was welcomed with a unified roar as the remaining gangsters started charging forward.
Riley felt a hand on his shoulder.
"I promised you that you wouldn't have to get involved anymore, but maybe one last ride?"
Riley smiled.
"One last ride."
Alex gave Riley a thumbs up, and put on his earbuds.
"You take that dude with the mohawk; the guy on the left. I'll handle the two on the right."
Riley smiled and pulled out his earbuds too.
"Consider it done."
As Alex dashed away in haste, Riley ran in the opposite direction. Unlike the center or the right flank that were overwhelming in numbers, only a handful of people from the People's Brotherhood were at the left flank. This made sense, considering that there was only one enemy from the Estraneo there. Furthermore, among all of the Estraneo, he was the smallest in size and wielded only a metal bat.
As the soldiers from the People's Brotherhood closed in on the lone thug, the Estraneo held the bat in front of him and yelled, "The name's Grumpy. Remember it!"
Grumpy smiled as the first guy initiated his attack, shooting his pistol at Grumpy from five meters away. Grumpy made no effort to dodge, and instead simply blocked every shot with his bat.
"Is that the best you can do? Well, now it's my turn!"
Grumpy swung at the last bullet, somehow causing it to ricochet and hit a Brotherhood Lieutenant in the head, killing him instantly. With their Lieutenant down, the rest of the thugs stopped in their tracks, hesitant to get closer to the man who could deflect bullets.
"Aww, is that all? I thought you guys wanted to play?"
Grumpy giggled before pretending to sulk. He then swung his bat again, this time blocking an attack from a much greater distance.
"Oh, so close."
Pulling out a knife from his jacket, Grumpy flung it towards the direction of the gunshot. After a short pause, Riley heard the thump of a body falling to the floor.
The men of the People's Brotherhood were in shock at Grumpy's display of skill. He could block bullets with his bat at an inhuman speed, and hit knife-throws at great distances. They had hoped to be able to quickly overwhelm him with numerical superiority, but instead was faced with a monster who had killed their Lieutenant by reflecting bullets.
"Honestly, if I were you guys, I would start running."
One of the thugs, who was completely horrified by what he just saw, turned tail to flee for his life.
"Jokes, none of you are leaving here alive!"
Grumpy swung his bat at the running thug with such force that it pressurized the air, causing a projectile of air to launch forward, creating a crunching sound as it collided with the thug. The impact blasted the thug off his feet, leaving him lifeless on the ground.
"Man, I love it when they go crunch. So, who's next?"
The mafiosos of the People's Brotherhood knew that they stood no chance against such extraordinary powers. However, after seeing one of their comrades die to what was essentially air, none of them wanted to risk being the next target. As such they stood still, legs frozen in place like the roots of a tree.
"Fuck this."
Riley pushed his way through the thugs and stood in front of Grumpy.
"Oooh, I didn't know this was a masquerade party. Looking very fancy there with the suit and mask. You must be very rich."
"You guys, go help the others. I'll handle this freak."
Grumpy let out a loud laugh.
"Pffft, HAHAHA! You, handle ME? Bitch please. I could probably take your Underboss in a fight bare-handed."
"What are you guys waiting for? Go!"
The thugs snapped out of their daze and, on hearing Riley's command, started fleeing.
"Hey! Who said you guys could lea-"
Before Grumpy could even finish his sentence, Riley had charged forward, his speed amplified by <Extreme Agility>. As he got closer, he utilized his bread and butter technique, <Quick Draw>-ing his metal bat from his Inventory, and aimed a <Power Swing> at Grumpy's head.
Grumpy's eyes widened at the sudden burst of speed from Riley, and used his bat to block the attack.
The force of the impact from Riley's attack caught Grumpy by surprise, and he staggered back a few steps. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Riley summoned his gun, which he had loaded with bullets prior to the engagement. Pointing it directly at Grumpy, Riley fired. The bullet exploded into pellets, each of them finding their mark on Grumpy's chest.
"Oof!"
Grumpy, who had already lost his balance from Riley's initial attack, fell to the ground after being hit by Riley's shotgun spell at point blank. With his opponent down, Riley looked around and surveyed the battlefield, trying to identify Alex amongst the chaos. Suddenly, Riley heard shuffling behind him, while [Sense Danger] rang in his head.
[Dodge Step] activated just in time, as Riley felt a downward swing split the air where he had stood just a half second ago. Turning back, Riley saw Grumpy staring him down. With one hand, he was gripping his bleeding chest wound, and the other, his bat.
"What the fuck? How are you still alive? That was a shotgu-"
"I don't die easily, kiddo. You should've aimed for the head."
After finishing his sentence, Grumpy swung again; this time so quickly that Riley didn't see it coming until it was too late. The attack threw Riley off his feet, and he landed several meters away from Grumpy.
'How is he able to swing so fast and hard with just one hand?'
Gripping his stomach, which had received the full brunt of the attack, Riley saw Grumpy charging towards him.
"Well, you didn't let me recover either."
Before Riley had the chance to get up, Grumpy was already on him. His bat quickly made contact with Riley's side, and he was rewarded with the sound of bones crunching.
"Argh!"
"Damn, that was a satisfying sound."
Grumpy slammed the bat end-first into the ground, the sheer strength of the move creating a dent in the ground deep enough that when he let go, the bat stayed upright. Straddling Riley, he said, "Wow, you're a pretty tough fellow. That's good. It means you won't croak after what I'm about to do to you; you're going to take the beating that I was gonna give to your friends instead."
With that, Grumpy started landing punch after punch on Riley. As he was getting hit, Riley tried to cast <Shadow Move> to escape, but nothing happened.
'Fuck! I only equipped my Vigilante's Mask! That means I can't cast <Shadow Move>!'
By this point, Riley was bleeding profusely from his nose and mount, with scars and bruises forming on his face as Grumpy laughed maniacally with every hit.
'I need a way to escape this, somehow.'
"Bang!"
"Bang Bang Bang!"
The sound of several gunshots caused Grumpy to stop the onslaught of punches. Riley weakly opened his eyes, catching a glimpse of one of Alex's men who had originally escaped. He had returned with a pistol, and was now unloading the entire magazine at Grumpy.
"Stop! I'm not letting you kill the Boss' son!"
'What!?'
"Ay, one of the chickens has returned. Don't worry I'm almost done with this one. After that, we can play."
"W-what? How can you be fine after getting shot so many times?"
The thug continued to fire at Grumpy, but each bullet seemed to bounce right off his skin as if they were rubber bullets. Soon, the gunshots stopped as the thug ran out of bullets.
"You're dead meat, punk."
Grumpy stood up from Riley's bloodied body and walked towards the thug, who was desperately trying to reload his gun. Cracking his knuckles, he got up right into the thug's face and smacked the gun out of his hands. Smiling, he grabbed the thug by the collar and lifted him as if he were a child.
"You should've run while you could. Just look at the other guy to find out what happens to people who try to be heroes."
Suddenly, Grumpy froze as he heard Riley scream something behind him. Turning around, he saw Riley, who had equipped his Vigilante Gear and managed to put a fair amount of distance between them. Without a moment's hesitation, Grumpy dropped the thug and picked up something from the floor before giving chase. Riley reached the base of the warehouse's five storey watchtower, and started climbing. Normally it would've been an easy climb but right now, Riley had to utilize every remaining ounce of willpower in his body to resist the pain coursing through his body in order to finish the climb.
Halfway up the tower, Riley looked down and saw Grumpy giving chase with a weird smile on his face. It wasn't the look of a man who was about to take pleasure in killing, but rather of a creepy stalker or obsessed ex.
As he reached the top, Riley waited at the edge of the tower for Grumpy to catch up. Watching Grumpy climb the last few stairs, he moved his bloody lips.
"So, whatcha got there?"
"Give me your foot, my dear princess."
"Come get it then you idiot."
Pulling out his pistol, Riley fired three rounds of <Bullet Party - Shotgun> into Grumpy. After it seemed clear that Grumpy wouldn't be deterred, Riley pointed his gun at the nearest window and fired, after which he started sprinting towards it.
"You ain't catching me!"
Reaching the window, Riley closed his eyes and prayed.
'Well, here goes nothing.'
Riley vaulted out of the window. Turning his body around to face upwards, he saw Grumpy follow suit, one of Riley's shoes in his hand.
'It worked!'
Riley then immediately looked toward his left, at the tower and cast <Shadow Move>. Although Riley had never tested it, he figured that <Shadow Move> was a blink, not a dash. His hypothesis was proved correct when he phased through the wall of the watch tower and landed on the staircase. However, the momentum of the fall, instead of disappearing, actually switched directions — towards the direction of his teleport. Thus he ended up crashing into the staircase wall. Taking a moment to recover, Riley started laughing at the absurdity of what just happened. Soon after, he heard a loud thud outside the watchtower.
'That may be the first and last time I ever get to use <The Cinderella Effect>... I can't say I ever expected it to be useful, let alone save my life.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alex arrived on the right flank where his troops were already engaging the enemy. Before he had arrived at the scene, he felt confident that his people could handle themselves. However, the scene before him shocked him immensely — two of the Estraneo, one fat and one thin, taking on 15 of the People's Brotherhood without breaking a sweat.
Alex observed their attacks carefully. Strangely, their fighting styles seemed to be the opposite of what their physiques would suggest. The fat one could dodge attacks with the ease of an Olympic gymnast, and used his twin daggers to slit throats with the precision of a surgeon. The thin one, on the other hand, did not even bother with blocking or dodging; he instead took every attack head-on with his body. He would then return in kind, punching with such force that you could hear the snapping of his opponents' bones.
'You really can't judge a book by its cover.'
In the short time span that Alex had arrived, the two of them had taken out six of his men. Deciding that enough was enough, he selected a song on his iPod, then stepped in.
"You guys go help the center. I'll take them on."
"What? We can't just leave you Boss!"
"Go. That's an order."
Reluctantly, the rest of his men that were still alive backed off. The larger man chortled, then started addressing Alex.
"Well well. You said you were Mr. X, right? I'm Fatso, and he's Tiny. Do you really think that you can take us on just because you're a Boss?"
Alex smiled and started tapping his feet to the tune of the music.
"We won't know until we try."
Fatso grinned.
"That's the spirit."
Suddenly, he disappeared. After a split second he reappeared in front of Alex who instinctually ducked, resulting in his fedora being cut to ribbons.
"I'm impressed. Not many people can keep up with my speed."
"You flatter me."
Alex fired a shot at Fatso, who promptly dodged the attack. Sensing an opportunity, Fatso unleashed a flurry of slashes at Alex. Due to Alfred's ingenious designs he was able to avoid getting cut but by the end of it, Fatso had filleted a portion of Alex's suit. Fatso then flicked his wrists — rotating from hammer into icepick grips — then plunged both knives at Alex's shoulders. With no time to dodge, Alex dropped his gun and caught both of Fatso's hands. For a few seconds, both men struggled against each other. However, the stalemate was interrupted when Tiny appeared at Fatso's side and promptly threw a punch at Alex. The attack hit him in the gut, causing him to cough blood.
"Not looking too good there, Mr. Boss. You should've fled while we were distracted with killing your men. Now you're going to die, then we're going to hunt down your men for sport."
Hearing this, Alex glared at Fatso.
"You're fast, but you lack power. That's why you need to use sharp weapons — because you wouldn't do any damage otherwise. I, however, have no such limitation."
Alex let go of Fatso's arms, allowing the daggers to hit their mark. However, only the tip of the knives were able to penetrate his suit. As the daggers dug into his flesh, Alex winced slightly at the pain.
Before Fatso could even react, Alex punched him in the gut, then immediately grabbed his head and slammed it into his knee. As Fatso was reeling back from the attack, Alex twisted his body to the left, then launched a kick, aiming for Fatso's jaw. The attack struck true with a loud crack, and with such force that Fatso's head rotated more than 90 degrees. His lifeless body fell to the ground with a resounding thud.
'One down, one to go'
Suddenly, Alex was struck to his side by Tiny. Although the suit absorbed some of the impact, he could still feel a few of his ribs cracking.
"I'm surprised you managed to kill him. Well, he always was all talk. Let's see if you can put up a good fight against me, Mr. X."
Wordlessly, Alex rolled up his sleeves and loosened his tie, then he folded it and stuffed it into his pocket. He then brought his arms up into a fighting stance and started grooving to the beat of his music.
Tiny laughed, then charged forward. He then threw a punch at Alex, aiming directly for his face. Although his movements weren't as fast as Fatso's, Alex knew that if the attack hit, he would be done for. If the punch didn't obliterate his skull, the impact would rattle his brain, causing a concussion at best and completely mulching his brain at worst.
Tiny's fist flew past Alex's head. In response, Alex counterattacked with a right hook to Tiny's ribs, which Tiny made no attempt to block or dodge. The attack landed, seemingly having done no damage. Tiny smirked.
"Barely felt a thing. Just like Fatso, you're all talk too. So, how are you going to win? Your attacks are too weak to even damage me, but if I land even a single hit on you, you're toast."
"This is how."
Bringing his knee up, Alex unleashed a devastating attack on Tiny's groin. Tiny, for all his toughness, could not resist flinching. In the split second where Tiny was distracted, Alex brought out a second gun from his jacket and fired. The bullet ricocheted off Tiny's skull and hit the ground near Alex's feet.
"You tried. As you can see, my skin is pretty tough."
"Don't worry. This time I won't miss."
"What?"
Alex adjusted his aim then fired again. The bullet entered Tiny's skull through his eye, passing right through his brain then lodging itself in his skull. Alex put the gun away as Tiny fell to the floor, dead. While catching his breath, Alex looked around to see how the battle was going. Glancing at the center, he saw something that caused him to break into a sprint.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Riley emerged from the entrance of the watchtower. The loss of blood and the damage he had taken had made his climb down very difficult, and he had resorted to using his bat as a walking stick to prop himself up. He walked over to Grumpy's splattered body and retrieved his shoe. As he was putting the shoe back on, he surveyed the battlefield.
After a short period of observation, Riley spotted Alex landing the final blow on his opponent. Remembering that Alex had innately low stamina, Riley could see that the battle had definitely taken its toll on him. Seeing that the coast was clear, Riley started moving to the right flank, where Alex was. Suddenly Alex — in his weakened state — broke out in a sprint toward the center of the battlefield. Riley followed his vision, and saw that he was running towards his Underboss, who was at the mercy of Buffalo.
However, because he was so fixated on Buffalo, he almost failed to notice an attack from another Estraneo member. Grinding to a halt, he dodged underneath the crowbar that had been swung at him, only to be immediately punched by Buffalo, who had quickly closed the gap between them.
"NO! ALEX!"
Riley activated <Extreme Agility> and started sprinting forward, ignoring the overwhelming fatigue and blood loss. As he did so, Buffalo was walking towards Alex, who was lying on the floor groaning with pain. When he reached, he rummaged around in Alex's pockets, before pulling out two sets of keys.
"Gotcha!"
Pulling out a gun, Buffalo shot Alex twice in the chest before striding off towards his trucks.
"Woo! Free guns and one less council member. Talk about a two-for-one special!"
On their leaders' cheers, the rest of the Estraneo that weren't dead followed Buffalo back to the trucks. In their wake was an army of dead or wounded People's Brotherhood men, their morale crushed after the defeat of their Boss.
Riley soon arrived at Alex's side and fell down and examined his state. He noticed that his suit was in tatters, and that the bullets had managed to penetrate through and cause copious amounts of bleeding.
"ALEX! Someone call an ambulance!"
Riley took off his shirt and placed it over the bullet wounds, hoping to stop the bleeding. Alex coughed out some blood, then gazed over at Riley.
"H-hey kiddo. *coughs* what's wrong?"
"Don't worry, it's going to be okay. They're calling an ambulance now. You just need to hold on for a little while longer."
"No, there's no saving me now. Listen, before I die-"
"NO, you're not going to die! We're both going to make it out of this! You and me, the dynamic duo! No one can beat us!"
"Well, now you know. There's always a bigger fish out there. Now listen. There's something you should know."
"What is it?"
"Have you ever wondered... Why I chose you? Why a random gangster like me would be so nice to you?"
"Sometimes, yeah. I mean, dropping 40k on suits?"
"Well, here's the reason why. Riley, I'm your father."
Riley's jaw dropped.
"I… I didn't think it was true… but that means mom-"
Alex burst into laughter.
"AHAHAHAHAHA *cough* *cough* *cough* You should see the look on your FACE!"
Riley facepalmed.
"You asshole. I legitimately thought you were serious."
"Nah, 40k on suits is nothing. I'm rich as hell. Too bad that's not going to save my life right now. Those guys really did a number on us, huh? *cough* *cough*"
"No, don't say that. The ambulance is on it's way now."
"That's a lie and you know it. Everybody else is either dead or unconscious. This is the end of the People's Brotherhood."
"No no no! You were supposed to reform the Brotherhood! This can't be the end!"
"I'm afraid it is, Riley. I said that I would help you out financially, but I guess that's not happening anymore. I'm sorry I couldn't do more for you."
Riley fought back his tears.
"No, I'm sorry that I couldn't help you. It took all I had just to defeat one guy, and you managed to fight off two. If I had just been stronger, this never would've happened."
Alex smiled.
"That's alright. You live and you learn. Now, can you let me sleep? I'm getting tired…"
As he said this, all life left his eyes. Riley ran his hand over Alex's face, helping him shut his eyelids, while tears streamed down his own.
"We haven't known each other for long, but I didn't regret partnering with you for a second. Rest in peace, Alex."
