A new hope rises

It all started about 20 years ago, when a professor discovered how to manipulate human DNA and created all kinds of mutant creatures. I was one of them and so was Raven. Our creator kept us in cells, taking us out only to conduct more tests or to try out new serums on us. What I never figured out in the end, was if I was human at some point and then turned into what I was today, or if I am a completely created creature. Creature. That disgusting taste it leaves on my tongue.

I was one of his last creations along with Rose and Raven. Both were one of the most powerful Abnormals he had created. His Masterpieces. Due to our common special interest to The Creator, we spent a lot of time together inside of the lab. We always stuck together, helping one another after all the procedures. We promised to never part ways.

We were a special combination of friends. Both Raven and Rose were third generations, whereas I was technically a second generation. I call this unusual because normally groups were only formed within the same generation. But there was a special reason why we came together in the first place, but more about that later.

The first generation of Abnormals were super strong, could breathe underwater, jump higher than any human could dream of. Their looks didn't differ much from your average human. The only visual differences they had were their eyes which had unnatural colors.

The second generation had creature like horns and wings. They stood out not only because of their looks, but their temper and personality was always extreme. For example; an Abnormal with wolf blood was very loyal and got really attached to his or her family/friends. A lion mix will not only have golden eyes and mane like hair, but would also have a high sense of pride.

The third generation, were completely human looking if they wanted to. They were an amplified version of the second generation, only that they could actually communicate with their respective animal and willingly turn in and out of it. In addition, some of them had some telepathic or telekinesis powers. I thought it was fascinating. But because that procedure was very difficult and painful, most Abnormals died. Raven and Rose were part of that generation. The last generation of Abnormals.

And then, there was me. I was his second to last project. Technically I was a second generation Abnormal. I am half fox, therefore I had a bushy red tail, fox ears, a keen sense of smell and my eyes were superb. But I guess he wanted to see if it was possible to turn a second generation into a third generation Abnormal. With too many procedures to count, he worked on me. He didn't succeed in giving me mental powers, instead he created "the shift". When I shift, my strength goes to an absolute peak for about one minute. I loose complete control and destroy what ever I come in contact with. Thanks to The Creator I was a living killer machine. After turning an average powerful Abnormal into a monster, he wanted to turn Rose into his personal powerhouse. She already was above average for an Abnormal. Now add in even more power into the mix and well, you get the point.

Rose wasn't okay with that at all and resisted valiantly. Yet her resistance was futile and she was taken in anyway. She had telekinetic and mind reading powers before, now she could also control her victims and if she really focused, she could blow up metal walls, disintegrating everything in sight.

At that point we could have escaped at any time we liked. Who was going to stop us? The Creator's minions were mere humans. No match for us. But maybe, we didn't want to leave. I mean, where would we go anyway? Through windows we could see outside, yet all we saw was a never ending ocean of stormy waters. We were strong, but not even we could conquer the ocean like that. On top of that, we were all kept separated by generation and gender. We hardly saw the others. This made it hard to communicate, thus it was impossible to start a coordinated rebellion.

Rose began to defy any rules possible. Staying up after hours, sneaking out at night, stealing food. Every time they came to get her, the guards had to use a tranquilizer to subdue her. She was obviously not able to handle the strain of her new powers. It started eating away at her sanity. Once she even attacked some guards, killed all of them, trashed the whole cafeteria and severely injured two other Abnormals. Her eyes were blood shot. Raven stood protectingly in front of me while Rose raged on, splintering windows and screaming at the top of her lungs. I've never been so afraid in my life before.

Nevertheless, The Creator continued on with his work.

It got worse and worse. After a while she completely stopped talking to anyone and we had to almost force feed her to keep her alive. Just before Rose was taken away again for another Procedure she told us that never again was she going to be taken advantage of. We didn't think much about it and waited for her in the cafeteria of our so called home. We waited and waited, but she never came back. Shortly after The Creator sent out a voice message through the loudspeakers thoughout the facility, saying with faked sadness that one of his masterpieces had failed him. I knew what had happened. It was just like Rose. I bet she took her own life, rather than being used again. Raven and I could hardly comprehend what had happened. From that moment on we were inseparable. We resisted every second of the day. Life was a living hell, but it was worth the fight.

If I had to use one word to describe Rose I would say she was a rebel.

He was stopped eventually by the United Nations and taken into custody. Information was leaked from one of The Creator's employees. His "experiments", that means us, were taken out of our cells and rounded up. We were forced to sit and watch as the council of the United Nations decided on what to do with us. I clung to Raven throughout the whole meeting. I dared them. Dared them to try and separate us. Their question was: Should they kill us? After all we weren't human so we didn't have any human rights in their eyes. We were just some dangerous dogs that without a leash might bite them in the back the moment they turned away from us. But slaughtering us all would have caused an uproar across the world for sure.

After some hefty debates, they claimed that we were human enough to let live, but we were to be kept under strict observation. We were first moved to Blue Rose High. It was a place that had a massive campus with dorms, different kinds of restaurants, parks, swimming pools, a school and so on. But in the end, no matter how big and beautiful you make it look from the inside, a cage is still a cage. And we were inside of it.

Big brother Kyrill fought hard for our rights. He persuaded the human council that we were indeed humans who had fallen victim to abuse and unauthorized human experimentation. Most of us were under eighteen and therefore the child rights applied to us. And so, as stated in them, we had the right to an adequate education, a place to live and freedom from any discrimination.

Many humans supported us, but sadly a lot of people also fought against us. The tension kept rising and rising. In fear of a rebellion, they let us all go and live in the real world.

And that's when the real trouble began.
