Chapter Thirteen: A Kind Beta

Kinsley’s POV

I collapse just off the river’s edge, following it all the way to the end of the pack boundary lines. My body is rattled with heat, my head spinning while I sink to my knees in the damp grass. Tears fall down my pale cheeks and I can’t determine why.

I don’t even feel a mating pull to Terron, but I do feel something.

Whatever it is now, it hurts beyond comprehension. I double over, sobbing into the grass while the white-water rapids cover the sound up with the rushing waves that flow at my side.

“Luna,” a gentle voice hums, trailing from behind me. “Hey, Kinsley, what is going on?”

I meet Lucas’s light eyes and cry harder. “I saw– It was Terron and that girl– they were kissing– roses everywhere– I can’t— he is going to reject me just like my father did.”

Lucas sits in the grass beside me, holding a string of fish on a rope, he must have been hunting before I came running out here. He looks at his hands, at his fish, and shakes his head.
