Jacob heart swelled. “Then let me help you. Let me ask him over and we can talk to him. We can feel him out. If we don’t think he can help us, we’ll drop it and talk about a new plan.”

Luka grabbed Jacob’s waist and pulled him into the chair to straddle his lap. “You really still want to be with me even though I may be a murder suspect? Aren’t you worried I could cause problems for your shelter?”

Jacob shook his head. “First of all, there is no wayI would ever believe you were a murderer—even if you hadn’t told me the truth just now. If your dad really tried to pin your mom’s death on you, we need to get that resolved so you’re not carrying that around for the rest of your life. And second, no I don’t think you will cause issues for the shelter. The truth has a way of coming out, Luka. And nothing—nothing—will change how I feel about you. I’m pretty crazy about you.” His cheeks heated at his admission. It didn’t help that his body reacted to being in Luka’s lap.
