Chapter 33

Shit.Once again, it was like the man could read his mind. He smiled sheepishly. “I wasn’t sure if I could.”

Luka put his hand on Jacob’s knee and leaned in close. “If we’re going to keep seeing each other, we need to be open. That means you have the right to ask me questions.”

Jacob took a swig of his soda. “Does whatever you asked Patrick to look into have to do with what you wanted to talk to me about?”

Luka leveled him with an intense stare. “Yes.”

“Oh.”

Luka put down his plate and pushed his chair away from the desk, then raked his fingers through his hair. “I’ve been dreading telling you this, but I don’t feel right going forward without giving you all the facts.”

Jacob set his plate on the desk. “Go on,” he urged as he leaned back, settling in and giving Luka all of his attention. If Luka was ready to talk, then he was ready to listen. “Tell me.”
