Aspiring knights were trained rigorously at those academies. Academies that held guidelines on kindness did not kill each other during training.
That kind of thing happened after they graduated. The knights at Silverth Mansion were diverse. But those who were standing before Gris did not have much experience.
They had witnessed people die in the Doomsday Wave. Still, the fear remained. The Soulshard Axe increased their fear, so it was too late for them to react.
Gris gave the dead knight's leg a kick. It flew toward the knights ahead of him, who quickly moved back on instinct to avoid their friend's severed leg.
