“This, I think, is a wonderful building site,” he said. “If you construct a two-story house, you will have a decent view from the second story. On the other hand, for my taste, the sound of the waterfall trumps the view—but that’s just my opinion.”

“It looks like the mountain sort of stops just above us,” I said.

“That’s a bit of an illusion. There is a ridge just above us, and behind that is a small drop in elevation—after that, it is straight up. If you want an even more spectacular view, the ridge is accessible from behind. The ridge has an added benefit in that it stops any avalanche that comes down from the higher slopes in the winter.”

“I like it right here,” Marco said, “and I agree that the waterfall trumps the view, but I didn’t see a ‘For Sale’ sign out on the road.”

“Nor will you. I own this particular plot and had always planned to build up here, but never did so.”

“It’s not too late.”
