“How are things going at the hospital, Marco?” Father said.

“Very well, I think. I’m learning a few old tricks from some of the older guys, and they’re learning a few new tricks from me.”

“Any problems?”

“Only that of continuing education and training. Malcolm and I are privately working on a plan to persuade the other doctors to go somewhere for a few weeks of advanced training from time to time.”

“Is it difficult to persuade them?”

“Oh yeah. They’re way too comfortable here in their nice little ruts. The choices come down to the governing board of the hospital mandating some sort of continuing education or bribery. Failing a mandate, I think we’re going to have to offer them six weeks in interesting places such as London or Paris as an inducement to bettering themselves.”

“If that’s what it takes to keep them up to date, I will arrange for the necessary funding.”

“Malcolm will be delighted to hear that; he worries incessantly about the budget.”
