"Thank you for everything today" I smiled at her.
"Of course anytime" she said with a hint of sympathy in her voice which left me a little unnerved.
I hated being looked at that way.
"Listen, about the groceries-"I was cut off before I could even finish
"I told you, don't worry about it, just think of it as a gift"
she spoke with finality as she turned to the front, ending the conversation.
I closed the car door behind me and waved at the car while I watched its headlights disappear into the night, I was alone again.
Sighing I turned back to house and dragged my feet to the door searching for the keys in the process.
"I'm home!" I announced loudly to no one in particular, kicking off my shoes I headed for my room after placing the bags in the kitchen.
I flopped on my bed tiredly, groaning loudly to myself "I'm so tired".
I was amidst convincing myself to get up and eat something when I heard a loud shattering from the living room which jolted me into a sitting position.
I ran as fast as my blistered feet could take me, already anticipating a break in.
The first thing I did was check the windows, and then look around franticly before I spotted the black cat again, watching me smugly as she stood beside a broken photo frame.
"So, you are the culprit?" I squinted my eyes accusingly.
"You know you are causing me a lot of stress?" I gently approached the black creature petting her very carefully, afraid she might run off again.
"Are you hungry?" All she did was tilt her head before she ran off into the kitchen,
meowing in the process as she glanced at me over her shoulder.
"Okay, okay I'm coming" I shouted as if she could understand me as I made my way over.
---------------------------------------------------
After I was done with feeding her,
she disappeared again somewhere in this gigantic maze of a house, I didn't bother looking for her, she would find me again when she was hungry anyways.
Picking up the broom and a trash bag I headed for the mess awaiting me, I couldn't wait for this day to be over.
I picked up the picture, as I cleaned broken glass surrounding it,
absentmindedly glancing over the unfamiliar faces when my eyes caught a set of four-digit numbers in the corner, previously hidden by the frame.
"1805" I whispered before I felt a sudden surge of energy and motivation
"Yes! This could be it" I jumped up and ran towards the room.
'I wouldn't lose anything to try one last time, I had already spent hours, who knows maybe I'll find something valuable after all'.
My body was fuelled by adrenaline, my hands shook in anticipation as I entered the numbers into the keypad, holding my breath as I waited
"Please let me be right, even though I know the chances of that are very small".
The deep resonant sound that followed by a loud click was the sound of my victory,
I would've pat myself on the back if I wasn't to invested in this moment and curious to see what was behind all this security.
I was right after all, I did find something but how valuable it was, I wasn't quite sure yet.
