Chapter 10: Mysterious Escape

It's a sunny day. Neerial and I are on a lake, finishing up one of our final quests for today.

Quest: Catch five white pelicans alive.

In my sight is the Whiterian Pelican, which has white feathers, a long neck, and a long beak. Standing quietly in the lake, looking for fish to eat. With its guard down, I made my move.

I jumped at the pelican, making it fly away quickly.

"Neerial, it's coming!"

The pelican is escaping in the opposite direction. A hustling has been heard in one of the tall grasses. Coming out of it was Neerial; quickly grab the pelican.

I hurriedly ran towards Neerial and opened my book. The Pelican is struggling and trying to escape from Neerial's hands.

"Absorb!"

Following my command, the book absorbed the pelican successfully. Having its figure drawn on the page of the book.

"Nice job, Neerial."

"You too, Christ."

Raising both of our hands, we gave each other a high five for completing the quests.

Walking through the Wyourld City, I look at Neerial. She's wearing a nice, new outfit for an adventurer, and it sure does suit her.

For the description of her clothes, she's wearing a short brown jacket that has four pockets. Underneath are white long sleeves, and her pants are dark red with a belt that holds bags for necessary potions. She also has a waist bag that carries her equipment.

Her classes are fighters and mages. She mostly uses knives and uses her magic as a long-range resort.

"What are you looking at?" Neerial gave me a mean look and asked me.

I looked away, hiding my embarrassment from her.

"Your new clothes suit you," I said.

Her frowning face immediately turned into a grin. She went forward and made a spin as if showing off her clothes.

"Right? These clothes you bought me are so cute. Thank you, Christ." She gave me her gratitude with her hands on her back.

"No problem."

The two of us made our way to the guild hall. Reni, not being surprised anymore at the huge number I accomplish every single day, gave us our pay.

"Here's your pay for today, Mr. Skylar." Reni, with an ungrateful look on her face, gave us our pay.

I noticed that on the bulletin board, Journeyman and Novice Rank Quests can't be found. The only quests remaining are for Adepts and above. I turned to Reni and asked her a question.

"Hey Reni, when will the quests for the Journeyman and Novice be posted?"

Reni suddenly punched her desk as hard as she could. It's funny how her punch didn't even make a scratch on the table. Just a sound of her fist hitting it.

"THAT'S BECAUSE YOU DID ALL THE QUESTS SO FAST!" Reni, who couldn't contain her anger anymore, let out a scream.

"HOW IN THE F*CK DO YOU FINISH 10 F*CKING QUESTS AT THE SINGLE DAY? HUH!? NOT ONLY THAT, YOU FINISH ALL OF THEM BEFORE NOON! THE OTHER ADVENTURERS COMPLAINS THAT THEY CAN'T DO ANY QUESTS BECAUSE ONLY YOU DO IT!"

I turned around, trying my best not to laugh. I mean, her face is smoking; her face is all red, and you can actually see the veins in her forehead just waiting to pop.

Looking at Neerial, she's also trying her best to maintain her laughter. Forcing herself to make a poker face to not trigger Reni's anger any further.

"THAT'S IT! TOMORROW YOU'LL BE PROMOTED TO ADEPT RANK! SO GO HOME FOR TODAY AND ENJOY YOUR FREETIME! WORKAHOLIC FREAK!"

Reni shouted with all her might, kicking me and Neerial out of the guild hall.

Getting out of the guild, Neerial and I look into each other's eyes. We couldn't hold it anymore; we brusted ourselves laughing as hard as we could. I mean, we couldn't help it; Reni's reaction is so funny. It's like a red tomato being boiled.

"That was so funny," Neerial, wiping out the tears of joy from her eyes, said.

"So do you have any plans?" I asked.

"Not really, no."

"Then you want to go explore the city with me?"

"Sure."

We spent our time walking around the city, finding something to do. The two of us bought some street food and enjoyed the beauty of the Wyourld City.

It's late noon. Neerial and I spent our time looking around the city and talking to each other. We didn't talk about anything serious and just got to know each other.

"It's getting late; are you heading to the inn?" I asked Neerial.

"Yes, are you?" She asked back.

"No, you go first. I have an errand to run."

"Okay, I'll head first, then."

Neerial waved goodbye and headed back to the inn where we're staying. Just so you know, we're not staying in the same room. We have a separate room, so we have our own privacy.

I head my way, fully prepared, back to the dark forest.

It's night when I arrive. I sit on the ground and lean on the tree. Closing my eyes and concentrating my ears to listen to any form of movement.

A lot of time passed by, and I still couldn't pick up anything useful. I've been doing this routine every night despite my busy schedule in the morning. Luckily, my body has the strength and stamina to do this consistently.

It looks like today is another bust. I stood up and started walking away.

Before I went back, I heard something that piqued my interest. I stayed on my feet and listened carefully to my surroundings.

A sound of hustling grass has been heard. Sound that's not loud enough for small animals to produce. It's something big.

I quickly turned around and climbed the trees. Jumping on the branches one after another, trying to find the source of that noise.

After all the trouble, I spotted the werewolf. It's the same werewolf that attacked me the other night.

Looking for prey, the werewolf turned its head left and right and used its nose to smell any nearby animals or its most common victim, humans.

Taking advantage of its ignorance, I swooped in and slashed it with my sword. I landed perfectly and turned in its direction.

The werewolf groaned in pain, and my slash dealt it a huge amount of damage. It's blood falling to the ground.

I raised my right hand and made my next move.

"Blaze Dynamite!"

A ball of fire quickly hit the werewolf, and a huge explosion occurred. Blowing the trees and leaving black traces on the ground. Burning the grass into ashes.

The werewolf, who took the damage, stands steadily on its feet.

Looking into my eyes, the werewolf suddenly turns into a shadow. I've already had enough of that move.

"Whole Fluorost."

Emitting a huge light on my hands, the shadows of the place disappeared. Making the werewolf escape route disappear. The werewolf was confused and wondering what happened.

Not letting this chance get away, I quickly stabbed the werewolf straight in the chest.

.

.

.

I did it... The werewolf is lying on the ground, not showing any signs of life. My body, feeling the satisfaction, fell to the ground.

Looking at the beautiful moon, covered in the black ashes of the grass. I sit peacefully, feeling the coldness of the wind.

Slowly looking back at the sword. The werewolf is gone.

"What?"

I stood to my feet and looked for any signs of its escape.

"Not again," I whispered.

"NOT AGAIN!"

I ran all over the field as quickly as I could. Desperately looking for the signs of the werewolf, it's not dead! I know for sure that it's not dead! If it died, then I should've leveled up!

Hopelessly feeling despair, I fell on my knees, looking at the ground and gritting my teeth. Punching the ground over and over again, screaming at the top of my lungs.

Repeating the mistake I made, losing the opportunity that's right in my palm, and feeling my failure once again.

"Sorry, Merry, I didn't get to avenge you!"

I silently let out my despair in the middle of a destroyed, dark forest. I was surrounded by darkness and felt the cold of the night. Once again, I failed.
