Chapter 4: Sorries

MIRANDA 'S POV -

I saw Kendall coming towards me from the corner of my eye. I felt so guilty. If only I wasn't here , her mother would still be alive.

I saw dried trails of tears streaking down her face. She gently sat down next to me.

" I am so sorry...", we both ended up saying at the same time. We paused looking at each other and smiled. By the mere expressions on our faces it was obvious that none blamed the other and specially throught the strong bond we shared.

I felt the sofa dip beside me and abruptly my body quivered. Chris with his willowy voice talked so gently as if I was a kid," Are you ok? I am going to put some medicine on you...your arm is bleeding. I didn't mean to scare you, ok?"

His voice seemed like an angel's to me and I just dipped my head unable to form words. Why did I not apply the medicine on my own or ask Kendall to do it....I didn't know.

Kendall watched him with knitted eyebrows. I could guess that she didn't totally trust him yet. So shouldn't I but why did he seem so gentle.

Kendall just watched us in silence while he cleaned the wound with a rag and after applying the medicine wrapped it tightly with a clean rag. After doing so, he said to me," Don't move your arm and I will change the cloth so that it doesn't get infected. Meanwhile, if you need anything just call out to any of your friends or me. I will always be there." With that he just left.

KENDALL'S POV -

That guy, Chris seemed nice to a fault. But somehow I just wasn't convinced by his act. Something seemed amiss. Or maybe it was just me being overprotective. I couldn't tell.

But Miranda on the other hand seemed completely awestruck by him. She just looked at him and nodded at whatever he said. The Miranda I knew would never do that. She has always been so independent and ready to add her own two cents. Was she just shaken up now?

"Hey!", I called out breaking her glance at the retreating figure. She just looked at me annoyedly.

"You look like you would worship him." , I said to her. She just kept him and hit me on the elbow while glancing at the direction where Chris had retreated.

" Guys, he has to say something." , Ken said while proceeding to sit next to me on the three seater.

" These young lads. I thought I asked you to announce my arrival in a "royal" manner. What is this causal way of speaking. ", the old vampire royalty grunted. " Dad, this isn't the palace. Neither are they your courtiers. Just say whatever you have to.", Damon said exasperatedly.

Grumbling the ash king continued," Now we are not sure about the exact origins of the prophecy but we have a hint that it comes from a fable about millions of years ago when this land was a dwelling of only creatures like us. It was only passed down by word of mouth. That a certain protector of ours, might infact turn to be our destroyer if she is left to her fate. Hence, we must take care before she discovers the full strength of her powers on her eighteenth birthday. "

" Do you have any fact to this legend being true and not just an old wive's tale? How can we be sure that this is about Miranda? After all she is already mentioned in one legend. There can't be multiple ones about her", Ken questioned. " Of course not. That's why this legend had been long forgotten about. But whether or not it's about her remains unclear. I will have my minister look after this. But currently our main issue is the society out to get Miranda. Basically to murder her so that our race continues to survive. We hear even Harper was a member. And I am sure that they will rest only after getting rid of Miranda now that Harper is dead."

Tears pooled in my eyes and stung them but I hastily swallowed them before the could leak out. " What do we do now?"

Everyone threw pitiful glances at me while my rage boiled. Could they tell me what was to be done instead of the pitiful glances.

Unexpectedly the undead king spoke up and took everyone's attention off me," Your regime will be in chaos now that Harper is gone and those who were loyal to her will fight back. It is upto you now to keep the situation in control and handle your kingdom. Your failure to do so will result in jeopardizing the safety of Miranda."

Getting up, I ordered one of my men," Arrange a meeting with the ministers in charge. I shall address them." The man looked dumbfounded as he asked," When? This evening? Tomorrow?"

" In an hour.", I replied.
