The Misery of Us

Trigger warnings: Most of them, really. The first outbreak took the lives of scums. The second sent her to the academia, a place full of strife and intrigue where any misstep could lead to her death. The third will happen soon.   The world can be cruel, I can be crueler.

Second Outbreak

Sirius was not an easy person to get along with, let alone live with.

He was an uptight and stubborn man who spent most of his time in the garage fixing things that looked like toddler developmental toys from hell.

Despite this, Cecilia was fine; she ate at least twice a day and had a peaceful childhood for several years, even if she lacked the communication practiced by kids in particular and humans in general.

It took several years for Sirius to ask her if she wanted to enroll in school, an offer she might have happily agreed to in the first few months, but as time went on, she felt less and less need for company.

Their house looked like a warm little dump that was filled with stuff day after day; most of it was Sirius's scraps that the garage could no longer contain, but over time, Cecilia also started to develop a personality and collect interesting things she found, especially books.

Cecilia developed a new habit of walking at night and trying to explore the world around her while trying to find new things for her collection. Sometimes she met strange people or drunk teenagers, but she loved it; she wanted to know what was going on in a world she was barely exposed to.

Slowly but surely, people from her route started to recognize her, the growing girl who walked the same places every night and still looked in Bambi's eyes at everything around her.

The homeless and the troublemakers started to befriend her little by little; this is the first time that Cecilia got the feeling of 'friends', a feeling that she adored.

Sadly, it all started to crumble when she reached the age fourteen.

Perhaps it was because of the lack of nutrients and vitamins that Cecilia matured physically very slowly; she still looked eight or nine when she was twelve. But unfortunately, every person grows in the end, and by age fourteen, she could already attract some unwanted attention.

It started with some comments from the friendly homeless people she liked at first; after all, almost every interaction was new to her eyes, and she was thirsty for any kind of attention.

After some time, the drunken teenagers (by that time they could no longer be called 'teens', but they kept acting like that even through college) invited her to 'hang out', an offer she gladly accepted.

Well, not surprisingly, the next time Sirius answered the call, he found his goddaughter covered in blood and surrounded by corpses, just like he first found her.

It took a lot of time and money to silence the matter.

Unlike the accident at the orphanage, this time each of the participants had a family that investigated the issue closely. Sirius had to use threats, connections, and blackmail to stop the rumors from spreading.

But there was one place from which he could not keep the matter quiet: the source of all his connections and money, the Order.

Kira stood at the door, smiling from ear to ear in front of Cecilia's shocked face. He walked past her and through the door, not knowing that he was the first other than Cecilia and Sirius to do this in years, followed by a group of his underlings.

"Sirius! It's been so long. How many years have passed? Twenty, thirty years?"

Sirius looked more tired already after that single sentence, knowing what would come next: "It's been nine years, Kira."

"Ho, really? I couldn't know. It's really unbelievable that in nine years you found another girl with the exact same ability to murder everyone around her!"

"Kira-"

"After all, it couldn't be the same girl, right? You promised me the matter was done; you know how much I trust you."

Sirius sighed and gestured for Cecilia to go upstairs, but Kira's eyes had already fallen on her.

"So there's the wonder kid! Sissy, was it?"

"Cecilia-"

"Yeah, yeah, sissy. I wanna ask you something really important."

He got down on his knees as if to propose, but his tall figure and her short-to-her-age height meant that he was only half a head shorter than her.

"When do you prefer to die? Now, next week or later?"
