High School

Nia couldn't resist staring at Mavin who had his gaze fixed on his tablet as she sat in anxiety for the unknown. Studying him carefully, she noticed Mavin had a beige skin tone just like herself and their parents. His hazel eye color and upturned eye shape were just like hers. The only difference was that he was a boy and she was a girl.

Anyone would have mistaken them to be twins if not for their age differences. To top it all he had this lens that emphasized the genius character.

"How should I relate with him?" She grumbled to herself.

Mavin noticed her gaze from the back of his eye and instinctively glanced up at her, pushing his lens on the bridge of his nose with a quizzical look on.

"Hmm..." Nia muttered, lost for words.

Mrs. Ford gazed at them from the rearview mirror and noticed the awkwardness. "Is everything alright back there?" She inquired while she balanced her gaze between them and the road.

Mavin glanced from her mother to Nia and slightly shook his head. Mrs. Ford smiled and sent her concentration back to the road.

"Do you want to play?" He asked while tipping the tablet on Nia's way. Her mouth instinctively curved into a smile whiles her eyes bated with appreciation as she shook her head.

The rest of the journey continued in silence with each one of them doing their own thing.

At about 45mins of driving, Mrs. Ford finally pulled up in front of the gates of HIGHER HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL.

Nia stared at the huge metal gated building coupled with its spacious compound which had all races of students throbbing in and sighed.

Mrs. Ford deftly glanced over her shoulders at her, watching as she took her bag. "I have talked to the Principal about your condition." She announced.

Nia instinctively nodded her response without looking up as she glided out of the car, shoving her bag well over her shoulders.

"See you later," Mavin called and Nia swayed in his direction, leisurely waving at him as a smile spread across her face.

"Have a nice day dear." Mrs. Ford eluded as she sped off while Nia joined the crowd of students heading into the school.

She sent her eyes lurking around as she sauntered into the premises, not knowing where to go when someone almost jumped on her, wrapping the hand over her shoulders.

She deftly gazed at the invader and met eye with a blonde hair girl with an ivory skin tone; about her age, smiling sweetly at her.

"Hey," She giggled, noticing the quizzical look on Nia's face while she let go of her shoulders. "Why are you looking at me like that? Did you see a ghost or something?" She asked, staring skeptically at Nia as they glided up the corridors.

"Who are you?" Nia bantered, making the girl scoffed. "Did you hit your head or you're just trying to be funny?" She muttered with a deadpan look.

The girl was about to nag Nia when a voice interrupted them from behind. "Iris?" The voice called, making the blonde hair girl turn in the direction of it as they instinctively came to a halt. "Were you able to finish the project work?" Martina, a colleague of theirs queried as she neared them.

"Oh yes," Iris replied, rummaging through her bag for the project work. "Here." She added, handing the book over to her.

The news of Nia's supposed amnesia after the Principal announced had already spread throughout the school like wildfire and had got almost everyone talking about it except for Iris who had no idea about it nor what happened to Nia due to her absence for those few days.

"I heard about you, Nia." Martina hinted, turning her gaze to Nia. "So sorry about what happened to you." She addressed which made Iris glance at Nia in apprehension. "I hope you get well soon." She added and strolled off, leaving the two to themselves.

"What happened to you, Nia?" Iris affirmed with a worried gaze.

"Well.." Nia stuttered as she staggered off with Iris following suit. "Mum said I have amnesia due to the impact from the fall a few days ago." She lied.

Iris instinctively gasped at this revelation. "How did this happen?" She inquired, her face evident of her worry but Nia was not ready for all those questions.

"By the way Iris, " She snapped in. "I'm so sorry for not being able to remember you," Nia said, ignoring Iris's question as she had no idea about it.

"Don't worry." She said, rubbing her back. "I will help you remember gradually. " She encouraged them while they rounded the corners to their class.

After a few minutes, they got to their classroom door. They sauntered in to find it in quite a rumpus with everybody doing their own thing that no one paid attention to them. "Over here," Iris muttered, taking the lead through the third row as she headed to the fourth desk on that column.

Just when they were about to settle in, the sight of an ebony black hair guy who had his head on the desk got her attention. She was quite surprised to see him asleep among all the chaos.

She processed to take her seat with her doubts about the guy when three girls walked up to her, making her pause mid-way with a skeptical look on as she was unsure who they were.

"It's funny you know?" The chestnut hair girl with an ivory skin tone among them whom she suspected to be the leader blunted; a smirk plastered across her face.

Nia tried to ignore her as she went ahead to have her seat but it seemed that irritated the girl. When she least expected, the girl knocked the desk with her leg from Nia's way; having her land her butt heavily on the floor.

"Cassie–" Iris called, glaring at the chestnut her girl.

"What?" She muttered with a satisfactory smile on.

Nia deftly glared up at her with her palm down flat on the floor and shrugged up. "What's your problem?" She charged.

The ebony black hair guy instinctively hissed, slamming his hand on his desk as he jerked up; making the whole class fall into silence while everybody's attention went to them. "Why so much rumpus?" He mumbled in agitation, swaying his emerald eyes on Nia and Cassie's way.
