The First Day At Work

"Here's the ID, sir," Matthew said as he arrived about an hour after the call. "I'm still working on the thing you asked me earlier," he informed Noah.

Nodding, Noah took the ID from Matthew's hand. "Was there any problem with this?"

"No," Matthew shook his head. "At first, they didn't allow it as they said both of you need to be there, but Mr. Elijah settled it."

"As expected from Elijah," Noah smirked. "Thanks, and please get me the information I need as soon as possible." He gave his order and turned to head back inside the house.

Matthew managed to peek inside, but there was no one, and it was quiet. He didn't really know what was the exact plan of Noah but he was sure this would not end well.

Upstairs, Sarah was still deeply asleep. Noah went straight to her bag and took out her purse, but he found only a few bucks inside, which for him, wasn't enough to survive for even a day. He put the purse back in her bag and glanced at Sarah on the bed. She finally turned to the right after an hour of sleeping like a statue. Honestly, he was amused that Sarah didn't even move a bit after he put her down on the bed.

"What an interesting woman," Noah said with his eyes fixed on her. He took a seat on the chair that was facing the bed.

"Am I doing the right thing?" He shifted his eyes to the balcony and looked up at the blue sky.

Sarah was getting ready for her first day at work and checked herself once again in the mirror. She smiled as she looked at the pink lipstick she had just applied to her lips. Her face looked better after applying it, as it had looked pale before. She rarely wore makeup on her face, but even a bit of lipstick on her lips lit up her expression.

When her phone made a notification sound, Sarah rushed to grab it. It was a text from Weyna: [Ready? I'm sorry for not being able to accompany you. I will go there on the weekend, promise!]

After returning from Noah's house, Sarah had found it strange that she hadn't received any missed calls or texts from Weyna. She had even called her to make sure everything was okay and that nothing had happened to her friend.

Weyna had reassured Sarah that she was fine and that Sarah had texted her the night before to let her know she was safe and had returned home. But Sarah couldn't help but wonder why Weyna had become quiet lately and why she seemed dull during their move two days prior, unlike her usual self.

[Nervous! Wish me luck!]

Sarah replied as she put the phone in her bag and rushed out the door to get ready for the office. She had checked the route to the office yesterday and fortunately, it only took her less than ten minutes by car.

Taking a deep breath, Sarah stepped into the small building, Skywards Holdings, the name of the real estate company she was going to work for. Although she had a curious feeling as to why this company was not listed under the TEDA group, she didn't think much of it. She had done some research and found that Skywards Holdings was a new and rising company.

"Good morning," Sarah bowed to the staff member standing at the front desk.

"Good morning, may I help you, ma'am?" the staff member, whom Sarah believed to be in her mid-twenties, asked.

"I started working today as a personal assistant to the manager here," Sarah explained while rummaging through her bag to retrieve the letter of appointment.

"Oh," the staff member answered, her eyes frowning slightly. "Please wait here for a moment, Miss..." Her voice trailed off as she waited for Sarah to provide her name.

"Sarah, Sarah Sander," she smiled, giving her name. Sarah slowly walked to the waiting area that was pointed out by the staff earlier.

The staff member rushed over to another person in the office area. "Lieta, have you heard that we are going to receive new staff today?" she asked. "Mr. Matthew never mentioned anything, right?"

"New staff? Who?" Lieta furrowed her eyebrows.

"I don't know. She said she's a new personal assistant to our manager. But we don't even have a manager yet," Maya replied, confused. She had been told to be on duty today since Cici was on medical leave, but no one had mentioned anything about new staff.

"Then it would be better to call Mr. Matthew to confirm," Lieta suggested.

Maya immediately dialled Matthew's number. "Hello, sir," she said as soon as he picked up.

"Yes?" Matthew answered.

"Is there supposed to be a new staff member reporting for duty today?" Maya asked, holding Sarah's letter of appointment in her hand.

"Oh my God, I forgot," Matthew's eyes widened. He quickly looked around to make sure Noah didn't hear him. "Yes, Sarah Sander. Please put her in any unoccupied cubicle for now. I will head over there as soon as possible."

Maya breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Sir," she said before hanging up the phone. She turned to Lieta and Maya, "Sarah Sander is supposed to be here. Mr. Matthew said to put her in any unoccupied cubicle for now."

Lieta nodded, "I see. Well, we better find an empty cubicle for her then."

Maya quickly led Sarah to an empty cubicle and showed her around. "Here's where you'll be sitting. The office supplies are in that cabinet over there," she pointed to a nearby cabinet. "If you need anything else, feel free to ask any of us."

"Thank you so much," Sarah smiled gratefully. "But Miss..." she stopped Maya from leaving. "May I know the name of the manager?" she asked, hoping to learn the name of her new boss.

"Err…" Maya dawdled, "The manager position is still vacant." She decided to tell her the truth.

Sarah's face fell, disappointed to hear that there was no manager yet. "Oh, I see," she replied softly. "Well, I'll just do my best to assist whoever takes on the role." She forced a smile and watched as Maya and Lieta left the cubicle. Sarah took a deep breath and sat down at her new desk, feeling a little uneasy about the situation.

Staring at her empty desk, Sarah twisted the pen in her fingers. She didn't have anything to do. It had been two hours since she arrived, but all she had done was stare at her cubicle and write useless things in her notebook. She had asked the other staff, but all they had said was to wait until she was assigned a task.

"Good morning, sir," Maya's voice could be heard from the front desk all the way to the back of the office. Sarah, however, was at the pantry making a cup of coffee to fight her sleepy eyes.

Matthew walked straight to the office space and introduced all of the staff to the new manager. "Where is the new PA?" Matthew asked, unable to find Sarah anywhere.

"Oh, she must be at the pantry," Lieta replied.

The sudden sound of the door being closed made Sarah turn around immediately. Her eyes widened as she saw the person standing in front of her. "What are you doing here?" she asked in surprise.
