Chapter 14: A No-Good Scoundrel

Clara’s POV

I walked through the upper garden with William, pleased by the conversation we had shared over the course of the morning. I was slightly surprised to see Randall standing on the steps leading down to the courtyard as we approached, his arms crossed over his chest and his face twisted in annoyance.

“Morning, Randall. I ran into Clara on my way to the Manor.” William tilted his head in my direction as we reached the top of my stairs, standing only a few feet from Randall, who was seething.

The two of them together always gave me a start. Randall and William were total opposites. William was tall and slight with the milky coloring and tawny hair that was so popular in court. He carried himself like a gentleman, but with a boyish, playful gleam in his easy gray eyes. If he had been high-bred, he would have been extremely popular at court.
