They defined it as just an asteroid that plunged into the earth's atmosphere, crashing down and forming a somewhat meteor crater.

However, no one could hear anything the moment it happened. Thus, there were more than a handful conspiracy theories about this emerging to the public. And they were all widely circulated in the community.
