The Discovery

"Attach the air tanks to the suits Claire. We'll be diving in soon," Andrew told me.

I attached the air tanks to the suits. I was so excited and caught up in the moment that I almost wanted to jump straight into the water without my gear.

Now I know most of you are thinking, "wow Claire you were just going to sign yourself up for suicide", but I just wanted to experience the ocean without my gear for once in my life or at least go for a quick dip in the water because Andrew was taking way too long to get ready.

I suited up and dove into the water without Andrew.

While I was swimming, I thought I was dreaming. It was like a whole new world. It's like a place where all of your worries and troubles could just disappear. It was like a whole new world reborn again just for me, but that's the magic of diving.

I looked around hoping to find some treasure from a sunken shipwreck or items other divers lost while diving. I didn't find much. All I found was a shoe, a camera, a phone, a scuba mask, and a really pretty crystal that I can add to my collection at home. About fifty feet away I saw a shimmer in the water behind a huge boulder. I decided to go check out the shimmer.

I swam a little closer to the shimmer to see what it was, but as I grew closer the shimmer appeared much more bigger than before and I couldn't get a clear image of what it was. I swam a tad bit closer to see what it was and I had no doubt that it was what I think it was.

When I turned to signal to Andrew about what I saw, he wasn't there. I totally forgot that I even jumped in without him. He probably thinks something happened to me since I totally ignored the number one rule which was to never ever dive alone under any circumstances. I decided to resurfaced to tell Andrew what I saw. Also, I prepared for the biggest scolding of my life.

"Where have you been," he yelled furiously, "I was calling your name a billion times Claire I thought you had drowned!"

Andrew is so silly! I guess he completely forgot that I had scuba gear on, but I'm just going to go with with the flow since he wasn't thinking about the scolding me for breaking the first rule. "I know I know, but I found something and I need you to come with me to check it out," I replied.

"Of course I'm coming with you," he yelled, "you think I'm just going to sit back and watch you dive the second time by yourself," he asked in a worried tone.

"No," I confusingly answered. "So is that a yes?" I confusingly ask. "Duh! Why the hell would I let you dive again for the second time by yourself?" He asked sarcastically. "I don't know because you let me dive the first time by myself," I answer. "No I di-, whatever Claire," he said.

"Also don't think I forgot that you broke the number one rule. You've got another thing coming when we get back to your place Claire," he said.

"Damn it," I yelled!

We dove into the water backs first like the professional divers we were and we started towards the shimmer in the water. Andrew had a doubtful look on his face.

I could tell what he was thinking. I had no doubt that it was the same thing I was thinking. We continued towards the shimmer in the water.

As we were swimming something started floating down in front of my face. I touched Andrew to get his attention. It looked like an orange fish scale with a weird pattern on it.

The shimmer from the fish scale was the same as the shimmer that was fifty feet away from us. I thought to myself, unsure of what we could be facing.

To be honest I really had no clues to what the shimmer could be. It could be a fish, some gold, or a glimmering high-heel. I'm wishing for it to be something rare so that we can sell it off.

"Please be a rare fish," I pleaded to myself in my head. Maybe I'm hoping for something better than a blue dolphin.

If you know really knew me then you should know that I always have my head in the clouds 24/7, so that means I'm really hoping to find something a bit more mythological than a rare fish like the Asian Arowana.

Since I was little I believed in fairy tales and mythological creatures, so stuff like magic, fairies, bigfoot, trolls, water spirits, sprites, and even mermaids. My goal was to witness at least one of these things before I head off to college next fall, but that was a silly dream goal of mine. I don't know why I still hope for it.

Today I was hoping to see something like that. So many people doubted me and told me that fairy tales are just myths and that they are just made up, but I know they're not made up. I mean come on! Has anybody ever seen a fish scale like this before? I know I haven't.

As I started to come to I saw Andrew waving his hand in my face trying to get me to snap out of it.

We started towards the shimmer once again. As we approached the shimmer something big started wiggling and sand was kicked up blinding our sight.

I was frightened by the thought of this creature not being a fish or a myth. It's much bigger than a fish to create an incognito for it self.

As the sand began to settle I noticed the scales were exactly similar to the one I was holding. Now that I have a better view there were rocks and coral everywhere.

There lies a long scaled tail that was about 5 feet long and attached to it was a pale human looking body. Andrew and I had no doubt that what we were looking at was none other than a mermaid.
