Chapter nine

The rustling of the trees passed by me in a blur as I ran past them deeper into the forest. It's like I knew it by heart. I'm currently training myself according to Nigel so I don't become an uncontrollable beast. At first, I didn't believe all the nonsense about the werewolf stuff but I started to notice. I could do things that were unexplainable like crush a boulder, hear from afar, and my vision at night was as clear as day.

I'm so pumped up for training and I don't want what happened last time to repeat itself. Nigel and I went to town to get supplies and I almost lost it, the whispers and voices were too loud and the stench coming from the meat sellers was too strong it was overwhelming. I almost lost control but thanks to Nigel who knocked me out and carried me back to the mountain, I avoided killing a bunch of people.

I reached the top of the hill where the marked flag was buried in the ground, ripping it off from the soil. I smiled looking back down, normally it would take a human two to three days to get up this high. This took me five mins, the sky was lighting up slowly, you could see the orange hue in the clouds. it was yet another day. I jumped down going back to the cabin only to see Nigel dressed in his hunting gear.

"Go suit up, we're going hunting today", I ran excitedly. " Are we camping out?". I asked putting on my boots as I hopped in a hurry to catch up with him.

"no, we'll be back before dawn", he looked at the sky where the sun had made it halfway into the sky.

" What are we catching today". I closed my eyes tightly, crossing my fingers. Please don't say bunnies. I peeked open my eyes to see him staring at me. I grinned trying to play off the embarrassment.

"we're getting deers this time," he fastens his revolver. Why do we need a gun? as if he read my mind

"I'm not strong compared to a full wolf, also in case someone messes up our dinner and it tries to get away this is where this baby comes in" he patted the gun giving me a smug look. I rolled my eyes. How hard could it be to catch a deer?.

some minutes later

I take back everything I said. These things are hard to catch. It's like they're light on their feet or hooves, literally floating on clouds. On my third attempt, I chased it side by side. I stretched out my claw to fracture its leg but it swerved, making me lose my balance, crashing into a tree. oopsy. the trunk cracked, making the tree plunge to the ground. I blew the hair covering my eyes. I came back huffing trying to catch my breath. He sat there polishing his gun.

"Any luck kiddo" he didn't look up but kept on polishing it. I didn't answer, that was his way of saying ``I told you so." you jump in headfirst without watching your opponent". he scolded me. I pouted to myself knowing he was right. He stood up, his revolver shining black from too much polish. He strolled towards where I came from. His steps were silent as he moved skillfully. I watched in awe as he set his gun watching the deer who was absent-minded to its demise. He kept a finger on the trigger, looking at the target.

bang!

it ran a few meters in shock before falling to the ground. my jaws dropped in awe. no way. "you have to teach me how to use a gun". he blew the snout. "no". he answered without any hesitation.

" Come on, please". he sneered at me. "learn how to control your wolf then 'maybe' i might teach you how to use a gun". he walked over to where the prey lay inspecting the damage. I rambled on how he looked cool with the gun. He chuckled a bit at a few words I said trying to hide his amusement. I continued rambling as he packed up the deer into the hunting sack. suddenly his head perked up, making me stop to look in the same direction. I could hear growls coming from that part of the forest. He hurriedly packed up signaling we should head back. I turned back one last time looking in the direction of the sound." what was that?".His steps were quick. I sprinted to keep up with him.

"something you're not ready for right now". I followed him back, I could hear it following us. He noticed too because he stopped dropping the bag aside. refilling the gun with another kind of bullet. I got behind, he crouched waiting. He calmed his breathing, till you could hardly hear his heartbeat waiting. I grew anxious hearing the trees moving violently, it was getting closer. I gulped, rubbing my sweaty palm on my jeans. here it comes. and it was....

a bunny?

growwwwwlllllll

a bear leaped out from the bush snatching the rabbit in its teeth, thrashing it about. poor bunny. It dropped the bunny halfway looking at... I turned back, me?

bang!

it went to the shoulders not phasing it at all. it raised its claw. Did I mention that this bear was huge, it towered my size?

" Move out of the way," Nigel pushed me out of the way, sending bullets into its head. it slumped to the ground lifeless. I came out of my daze, my heart thumping loudly. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to blackout. I just..."I was at a loss for words. He came to my side stretching out his hands to help me up.

"it's not your fault, like I said it was something you weren't ready for". I looked at the carcass thinking maybe it might get up again.

" do they normally attack like that? I felt shivers run down my spine as I stared at it.

"no, they don't" he walked around inspecting the bear. his eyes widened but were soon covered up with his serious expression. "we need to leave, it's already late". he picked up our kill walking towards the cabin. I turned back thinking I heard something but there was nothing. I shrugged it off catching up with him.

later in the night

I plunged my knife into its side hearing it cry out in pain. it slumped to the ground. That was the last of them. I glanced at my surroundings. just great, more problems. my shoulder ached, as blood oozed from the claw marks. I tore a piece of clothing tying up my arm. I let out an exhausted sigh, looking up at the half-moon illuminating the sky. What am I doing?
