Chapter 29: Night at the Cathedral

“Let’s get you inside,” James held out his hand. “It feels like rain now.”

As they made their way into the dimly-lit halls of the ancient church, the raindrops began to fall with a vengeance.

“That should help put out that fire,” Judith said with a weak smile.

The priest nodded and led the young women through the cathedral to a section that held small rooms where visiting priests would stay.

“The kitchen is right down the hall to the right,” James pointed. “I’ll make sure there is breakfast for you tomorrow, but feel free to find something to eat whenever you wish.”

Judith looked at the bed in her room, neatly made with clean, plain sheets.

“I think I just want to sleep,” said Judith. “It’s been quite an exhausting day.”

The priest gave a quick nod and left the friends to rest.

“I’ll see you in the morning.”

Edith looked around the room. It was furnished with two simple desks, a dresser with a mirror, a painting, and two single beds.
